Mil soles espléndidos.
Greetings, readers! Today I bring again a review of a dramatic book that also reached my soul: One thousand splendid suns, by Khaled Hosseini. Last week I reviewed the writer's first book: Kites in the Sky, in which the central theme of the story is the atonement of an Afghan refugee who had to leave his country because of the Taliban regime.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is also an Afghan story under the Taliban regime but its main theme is the religious environment of two women of different origins in full transition.
¡Saludos, lectores! Hoy traigo nuevamente un reseña de un libro dramático que también me llegó al alma: Mil soles espléndidos, de Khaled Hosseini. La semana pasada hice la reseña de la primera obra del escritor: Cometas en el cielo, en la que el tema central de la historia es la expiación de un afgano refugiado que tuvo que salir de su país a causa del régimen talibán.
Mil soles espléndidos también es una historia afgana bajo el régimen talibán pero su tema principal es el ámbito religioso de dos mujeres de orígenes diferentes en plena transición.
The characters:
Mariam: is the illegitimate daughter of a millionaire, who from a very young age is forced to marry Rashid, a man 30 years older than her.
Laila: A girl who grew up in a wealthy family, was destined to marry the love of her life but did not do so while waiting for her brothers, who went off to war. She ended up marrying Rashid and that's where she met Laila.
Los personajes:
Mariam: es la hija ilegitima de un millonario, a quién desde muy joven la obligan a casarse con Rashid, un hombre 30 años mayor que ella.
Laila: Una niña que creció en una familia acomodada, estaba destinada a casarse con el amor de su vida pero no lo hizo esperando por sus hermanos, quienes se fueron a la guerra. Termina casándose con Rashid y es donde conoce a Laila.
La trama:
Mariam y Rhashid se casan y todo es color de rosas al principio, hasta que se dan cuenta que Mariam no puede tener hijos, empieza a recibir maltrato físico de parte de Rashid y sobretodo cada vez que Mariam sufría un aborto. Por otra parte, Laila se casa con Rashid, se convierte en la segunda esposa, sale embarazada casi inmediatamente y él empieza a tratarla como una reina. Esto todo empieza a cambiar, y Mariam y Laila empiezan a ser amigas dentro de las penurias que empiezan a pasar ambas; se vuelven a amigas y confidentes.
What trapped me most in this novel, is not only the hardships of these women under a Taliban regime. We always take lightly the moment when we condemn Muslim women, without knowing, we talk about what is hidden under the burkhas and the wearing of hijabs. We don't know that many love this religion, that some give themselves with love to Islamic teachings, that not all these men are evil and that not all of them feel trapped.
Lo que más me atrapó de esta novela, no es solo las penurias de estas mujeres bajo un régimen talibán. Siempre tomamos a la ligera el momento en que nosotras condenamos a las mujeres musulmanas, sin saber, hablamos de lo que ocultan bajos las burkhas y el uso de los hijabs. No sabemos que muchas aman esta religión, que algunas se entregan con amor a las enseñanzas islámicas, que no todos estos hombres son malos y que no todas se sienten atrapadas.
We may not agree with them, but the novel shows us the different points of view in Islam, how women are treated in relation to men, but it also shows us that instead of being enemies, we should be allies. I highly, highly, highly recommend this work. This review falls short with all the emotions that it brings, I promise you that you will also cry, and a lot. Don't waste time and go get it. Khaled Hosseini knows how to touch the soul with his novels, because in them you can notice the nostalgia left by the land he had to flee from, and he shows us another way of seeing his culture.
Tal vez no estemos de acuerdo con ellas, pero la novela nos muestra los distintos puntos de vista en la el Islam, de como son tratadas las mujeres en relación a los hombres, pero también nos muestra que en vez de ser enemigas, debemos ser aliadas. Les recomiendo mucho, mucho, mucho esta obra. Esta reseña se queda corta con toda la cantidad de emociones que nos trae, les prometo que también van a llorar, y mucho. No pierdan tiempo y vayan a buscarlo. Khaled Hosseini sabe como tocar el alma con sus novelas, porque en ellas se nota la nostalgia que le dejó la tierra d la que tuvo salir huyendo, y nos muestra otra manera de ver su cultura.
