One of the first and most beautiful places we visited during our trip in Chile was Caleta Tortel. As usual, I almost never do any research about the places we are going to visit, so the surprise of discovering this place in situ made everything even more special. This place is an obligatory stop on your way through the Carretera Austral, so taking at least an afternoon to visit it is worth it. It is not every day that you visit a town with such a curious construction as this ❤️.
Uno de los primeros y más hermosos lugares que visitamos durante nuestro viaje en Chile fue Caleta Tortel. Como siempre, yo casi que no investigo nada sobre los lugares que vamos a ir a visitar, así que la sorpresa de descubrir este lugar in situ hizo todo aún más especial. Este lugar es una parada obligatoria dentro de tu paso por la Carretera Austral, por lo que tomarse al menos una tarde para recorrerlo vale la pena. No todos los días se visita un pueblo con una construcción tan curiosa como esta ❤️.
We arrived at Caleta Tortel after having driven a little more than 40 km from Puerto Yungay, where the boat dropped us off. Our decision not to go to Villa O'Higgins, the real end of the Carretera Austral, moved us in a northerly direction, where our first stop was this town, after a small detour from the main Route 7. When we arrived we found a parking lot where we had to leave the car, as this place can only be reached on foot.
Llegamos a Caleta Tortel después de haber manejado un poco más de 40 km partiendo desde Puerto Yungay, en dónde nos dejó el barco. Nuestra decisión de no ir hasta Villa O'Higgins, el real extremo de la Carretera Austral, nos movió en la dirección norte, dónde nuestra primera parada era este pueblo. , después de un pequeño desvío de la principal Ruta 7. Cuando llegamos nos encontramos con un estacionamiento en dónde obligatoriamente teníamos que dejar el auto, ya que este lugar solo puede recorrerse a pie.
And it is not that this is a whim, but that it can really only be covered on foot. A few meters from the parking lot, there is a staircase that leads downstream to the coast of this place. From there, a whole system of long walkways over the water begins, where houses, restaurants and even tourist accommodations are located. Of course, a car could not get in there!
Y no es que esto sea un capricho, sino que realmente solo puede recorrerse a pie. A pocos metros del estacionamiento, se encuentra una escalera que conduce aguas abajo hasta la costa de este lugar. A partir de ahí, empieza todo un sistema de largas pasarelas sobre el agua en dónde se emplazan casas, restaurantes y hasta alojamientos turísticos. ¡Por supuesto que un auto no podría entrar ahí!
What I liked about this place is that as we walked around it, we could see signs with information about it. It was a young settlement no more than 100 years old, although its first settlers were nomads who moved around in canoes. The water in this place is also part of the fjord we were sailing before, and its emerald green color is due to the mouth of three rivers, one of them the Baker which we saw at the beginning of our walk.
Lo que me gustó de este lugar es que mientras lo íbamos recorriendo, pudimos ver cartelería con información sobre él. Se trataba de un asentamiento joven de no más de 100 años, aunque sus primeros pobladores eran nómadas que se movilizaban en canoas. El agua en este lugar también es parte del fiordo que estuvimos navegando antes, y su color tan verde esmeralda es debido a la desembocadura de tres ríos, uno de ellos el Baker el cuál vimos al inicio de nuestro paseo.
One of the main activities here is the production of wood, with which they initially assembled all the walkways and which they are currently renovating. Paying attention to the great engineering behind all this construction was very curious, since the village is located on the slope of a mountain, so all these are spaces etched into the water. There was a main walkway that runs all along the edge of the mountain above the coast and many stairs to access the higher parts of the village. Incredible.
Una de las actividades principales acá es la producción de madera, con las que al inicio montaron todas las pasarelas y que en la actualidad, estaban renovando. Prestar atención a la gran ingeniería detrás de toda esta construcción era muy curioso, ya que el pueblo está situado sobre la pendiente de una montaña, por lo que todos estos son espacios grabados al agua. Había un pasarela principal que recorre todo el borde de la montaña sobre la costa y muchas escaleras para acceder a las partes más altas del pueblo. Increíble.
Being a village as such, of course it has its common spaces, such as the town hall, squares, school, kiosks and even a small medical center. In all this place there is no cellular signal, but there is a point with a free wifi to be able to connect. Another thing that caught my attention and that was specified in the signs, is the system they have to drain their sewage. This is a vacuum system, like the one that buses have, where through a system of pipes they collect all the sewage from the toilets in large tanks by suction. At least they managed not to contaminate that beautiful green water.
Al ser un pueblo como tal, por supuesto que tiene sus espacios comunes, como la municipalidad, plazas, escuela, kioscos y hasta pequeño centro médico. En todo este lugar no hay señal de celular, pero existe un punto con un wifi libre para poder conectarse. Otra cosa que llamó mi atención y que estaba especificada en los carteles, es el sistema que ellos tienen para drenar sus residuos cloacales. Este sistema es de vacío, como el que tienen los buses, en dónde a través de un sistema de cañerías recolectan por aspiración todas las aguas servidas de los inodoros en grandes tanques. Al menos se las ingeniaron para no contaminar esa agua verde que es tan hermosa.
When we first arrived, this place had seemed small but it was bigger than we thought. The orientation maps even showed that there were sectors within the town, sort of like delimited neighborhoods. We wanted to get to the end of it all, but we were walking for over an hour and the walkways never ended. We even got to a part where there was no longer so much water but the walkways continued: they really want to take advantage of this space.
Cuando apenas llegamos, este lugar nos había parecido pequeño pero era más grande de lo que creíamos. En los mapas orientativos incluso se mostraba que había sectores dentro del pueblo, algo así como barrios delimitados. Nosotros queríamos llegar hasta el final de todo, pero estuvimos caminando más de una hora y las pasarelas nunca se terminaban. Incluso llegamos a una parte en donde ya no había tanta agua pero las pasarelas continuaban: ellos si que quieren aprovechar este espacio.
For our walk back we found new walkways to walk on, which took you between private homes and warehouses. There were also signs indicating several viewpoints, where we found one that had a beautiful view. This whole place was beautiful, I had never seen anything like it. Besides, it was a cloudy day, so every time the sun came out, the colors seemed to stand out more.
Para nuestra caminata de vuelta encontramos nuevas pasarelas para poder caminar, las cuales te llevaban entre casas particulares y almacenes. También habían carteles indicando varios miradores, en dónde encontramos uno que tenía una vista hermosa. Todo este lugar era precioso, nunca había visto algo igual. Además, nos tocó un día un poco nublado, por lo que cada vez que salía el sol, los colores parecían resaltar más.
In Argentina we have a pedestrian village called La Cumbrecita in Cordoba, and I was also able to visit it in previous years. This one had the same vibe, but was much more special because of how ingenious they must have been to build it. The fact that they were renovating the walkways during our visit speaks volumes about the value of this place, and I liked that even though we saw a lot of cars parked at the beginning, we weren't so many tourists crowded together.
En Argentina tenemos un pueblo peatonal llamado la Cumbrecita en Córdoba, y también pude visitarlo en años anteriores. Este tenía las mismas vibras, pero era mucho más especial por lo ingeniosos que tuvieron que haber sido para construirlo. El hecho de que de hayan estado renovando las pasarelas durante nuestra visita habla muy bien de la puesta en valor de este lugar, y me gustó que, a pesar de que vimos muchos autos estacionados al principio, no éramos tantos turistas amontonados.
Many of the people we had met on the ship said they would be staying in Caleta Tortel, but our idea was to go a little further north that day. To conclude our visit, we just decided to have some lunch before continuing on our way. We ended up finding a small restaurant where we had a fish dish with salad and a drink for $18 each. A bit pricey if you ask me, but it was good and so were the views we had from the place.
Mucha gente de la que habíamos conocido en el barco decía que se hospedarían en Caleta Tortel, pero nuestra idea era ir un poco más al norte ese dia. Para concluir nuestra visita, solo decidimos ir a almorzar algo antes de continuar el camino. Terminamos encontrando un pequeño restaurante en dónde comimos un plato de pescado con ensalada y bebida por $18 cada uno. Un poco costoso si me preguntan, pero estaba bueno y las vistas que teníamos desde el lugar también.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip through Caleta Tortel, a unique place on this and all my trips. The truth is that, so far, Chilean Patagonia has been much more beautiful than I imagined. I was hoping to see incredible places, and this was already one of them. Another interesting fact is that, as always, we were assigned a dog to accompany us throughout the tour. As in any tourist destination, there's always a guide dog ❤️.
Disfruté mucho este paseo por Caleta Tortel, un lugar único en este y todos mis viajes. La verdad era que hasta el momento, la Patagonia Chilena estaba siendo mucho más hermosa de lo que me imaginaba. Esperaba ver lugares increíbles, y este ya era uno de ellos. Otra curiosidad es que, como siempre, se nos asignó un perro que nos acompañó durante todo el recorrido. Como en todo lugar turístico, nunca falta el perro guía ❤️.
