Hi my loving Hivers,
Greetings from Sri Lanka. These days rain falling heavily in my living area. Although the rain disturbs our work life, it is a comforting condition for the plants in our garden. After a dry season without rain, the rainy season brings fresh life to the plants. When the rain stopped temporarily, I took the time in the morning to see the growth of the plants in our garden. A wave of laughter appeared on my face as the harvest of some vegetable plants was blooming. The happiness I felt from the inside of my heart is more than the smile on the outside. I must praise the care taken by the members of the house to make everything go well. Some plants have been destroyed due to not being able to withstand the weather conditions even though we have taken good care of them. Only plants that can withstand the climate are growing.
Turkey berry cultivation, which was done as a hen cultivation in the past, is currently being done as a single cultivation because of the greater economic benefit. Higher prices have to be paid for thibatu in the market because its medicinal and nutritional properties are understood. Turkey berry, which has a special ability to withstand drought, is more widespread in the dry region. It can be called as a crop that is best suited to the dry region. Being able to plant this crop at any time of the year is a special feature. It is best if the planting is done during the rainy season. Even in a garden with limited space, it is more beneficial to plant two such trees. The reason is that it gives good results even without much attention. Moreover, the clusters of white flowers and fruits that appear at the ends of the branches also give beauty.
These days, due to the time of winged bean flowers and fruits, the vines in our garden are getting a good harvest. We occasionally give winged bean to our neighbors as the yield is much higher than what we use at home. These can be called as a high protein vegetable. Winged bean crops grow very slowly in the early stages, so be especially careful with weed control during this period. In some cases minor damage can be caused by insects such as leaf-eating caterpillars and pod borers. Cases of bacterial wilt damage to vines have also rarely been reported.
A vine sprouted from a bittergourd seed planted in a small pot is growing upward. Bitter gourd is a popular vegetable in our country. Recently, there has been a special interest in eating bitter gourd due to its medicinal properties. Water should be provided when necessary to maintain the soil moisture properly so that it is sufficient for cultivation. Unnecessary accumulation of water in the soil is harmful to cultivation. Applying a mulch around the vines during the dry season prevents the soil from drying out quickly.
My wife has planted some gotukola vines brought from my mother-in-law's garden in our garden and they are growing well now. In fact, if we put in a little effort, we can easily plant things like store-bought scallions, kankun, gotukola, and spinach and harvest them very quickly. No need to bring planting materials separately. The ripe stalks of the bundle of leaves are enough.
You can eat the unripe ones like kankun and cut the remaining stalks into two or two rings. Roots and new shoots emerge from those links. Scatter the cuttings in the bed or pot and add a little soil to barely cover them. Then they grow well. After the spinach seeds are ripe, they can be planted in a bed. Then it spreads like a vine.
A soil with good organic matter suitable for all types of vegetables. Make a bed by mixing top soil with compost, rotted leaf litter or manure and crushing the cubes. Needs a little extra moisture. It doesn't have to be sunny all afternoon. Even a slightly shady place can be used.
A few green chilli plants have been eaten by snails, so growth is limited. Also, small ants are used to eating them. Therefore, water mixed with soapy water was applied to the other plants as well. After that, the chilli plants started to flower. Keep the bed or pot free of weeds. Gardening does not encourage the application of chemical fertilizers. Compost and dung are good enough. If you do this with a little effort, you can eat it for a long time. How much is it worth that everyone in the family including children can eat without poison.
In terms of medicinal properties, papaya contains more medicinal properties than other fruits. People are very fond of papaya because it is an easily digestible food, helps to digest other types of food by eating it, and is a food that gives strength to growing children and patients. Papaya can be called a very nutritious fruit. Ripe papaya is used as a fruit for making drinks, jams, fruit salads. Curries and pickles made from raw papaya are very popular among Sri Lankans. At present, papaya prices in the market have increased more than the previous times.
Cloves, a herb used to flavor food, are being harvested these days. A rather large tree, it yields enough cloves for our domestic consumption, and the surplus is sold in the market. Cloves are commonly used as dried whole buds. Ground cloves are used as curry mixes, and clove oil is used in food flavoring and in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. Clove oil may be colorless or yellow in color. It turns dark if exposed to sunlight. It is used as a flavoring agent in the cigarette industry.
Pomegranate plant is grown especially in gardens as a valuable fruit and medicinal plant since ancient times. Pomegranate is also in demand as an ornamental plant due to the cuteness of the tree and its ability to flower for most of the year. Although the pomegranate plant can be found in various parts of Sri Lanka, it has not spread as a crop due to the lack of suitable varieties and the high incidence of diseases and insect damage. Mother has covered our pomegranates with polythene covers to protect them from insects.
