What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.
More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

Zapfic Entries 450-456

I'm playing UNO with Lindsay & Sanjay. "Which of these would you take: DRAW25 or a gift from the bird?" "The gift," said Sanjay "DRAW25." "Bad move." Lindsay and I saw a large gift land on Sanjay's head; she laughed hard.
---
ΒποΈ At least for a while, this is the last zapfic entry made to set up a conflect between Lindsay Etxeberria and Sanjay Rampersad. What I had intended to be a conflict ended up more as Lindsay showing how her laser-focused life as a far-left activist had stunted her personal development while showing Sanjay simply living his life. Even though he knows there is something between them, his betrothed status won't allow him to take things any further. ΒποΈ The last time any of us saw the "DRAW25" meme, the uncanny Manny Rey and David Guardia were in Defiance, Ohio, US playing UNO in a park. Back then, David made the wrong choice.

Defiance. Little did I expect to be passing by another town with that name, this time in New Mexico. Once she saw the road signage, Rhonda knew I was going to pause the ride for a few pics there. Then she & I explained the stop.
---
ΒποΈ Speaking of Defiance, this entry prompted a retelling of how David and Rhonda Bella Guardia had almost met each other at a time when neither knew about the other. David was just some guy living out a mid-life crisis when he picked up the uncanny Manny Rey as his co-pilot. At that time, Rhonda Bella finished a delivery she made as an independent trucker. The connection between David and Rhonda would be established when they meet in Davenport, Iowa, US, after his miraculous recovery from the near-fatal explosion in Le Claire, Iowa, US.

"Although we introduced ourselves in Davenport, Iowa," I began, "it was actually in Defiance, Ohio when we first saw each other." "I finished my haul when I went inside a bar to wash up," Rhonda said. "Then I see this guy"--
---
ΒποΈ The zapfic entry immediately points out the significance of "Defiance" for David Guardia. ποΈ While that was the first time we saw Rhonda Bella in GHAWG (before the creation of The GHAWG Universe and the zapfic serial Rat Bike), that was actually her 2nd appearance within the Hive ecosystem: Her first appearance was a cameo stand-alone zapfic entry prompted by the word freckles. Then as now, she was a "very tall redhead".

Rhonda points to me-- "already in a dispute over his jukebox selection." "Dude didn't like Sinatra; he told me so with a fist to the face. I looked for her--" pointing back-- "but she was gone. I made dude cry {matei}."
---
ΒποΈ Although his recollection of the incident is a bit off, David Guardia had been looking for Rhonda Bella as a witness to the trouble in which he found himself. As for trying to make the Sinatra Hater cry {matei}-- "Uncle"-- as a sign of submission, it was the most unhinged and unbalanced we see David in GHAWG or Rat Bike. Then again, who expects to be hit hard in the face just for picking a song at the jukebox? |

"You went all Bloodsport on him?" asked Lionel; I nodded. "Chong-li would have kicked my ass quickly," I continued, "but he was no Chong-li or Paco. So I made him regret that punch to my face. I was a different guy then."
---
ΒποΈ Lionel Odunsi recognized how how unhinged David Guardia had become as soon as he heard the term {matei}. Bloodsport (1988) was already a cult classic when David was Lionel's age, so by the time Lionel came of age the film was both iconic and legendary among fans of martial arts movies. Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) was the undisputed villain who Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) would confront in the final fight of the movie. To fight Chong Li, Dux (JCVD) had to first dispatch semi-finalist Paco (and, oddly enough, Chong Li's Final Four opponent was Jackson (Donald Gibb), a hurly-burly Harley-Davidson rider). Even if David hypothetically qualifies for the tournament featured in the movie, his appearance would have been a one-and-done. In relation to the fighting skills displayed by David and the fighters mentioned, Sinatra Hater would have been a couch potato paying to see the tournament on pay-per-view.

"I was surprised to see him in Davenport," said Rhonda. "Even before introductions we talked about his incident in Defiance, Ohio." "After Rhonda selected from the jukebox the better version of the song, the rest was history."
---
ΒποΈ Not that David and Rhonda Bella (as she was known then) were going to do anything at that point in time, but the song which led to the dispute in Defiance, Ohio-- "Fly Me to the Moon"-- would be intimately linked to these two characters. The Frank Sinatra version of the song was performed in part to commemorate the Apollo missions from NASA before man landed on The Moon on 1969-July-20. The Claire Littley version of the song had been chosen for the ending credits theme for the legendary anime series from the mid-1990s Neon Genesis Evangelion. Rhonda told David that her version was better, and David himself came to agree. So Claire Littley's interpretation of "Fly Me to the Moon" became "their song"; and in The GHAWG Universe it is their love theme.

"Most Patriotic Small Town in America," noted the colorful Gallup welcome sign. We stopped. Lindsay looked down; I knew why. "What the flag means to you & me differs, so we find a new meaning on which we agree, OK?" She nodded.
---
ΒποΈ Despite leaving the far-left activist life for good-- especially because it nearly killed her-- Lindsay Etxeberria is no fan of that flag. On the other hand, David Guardia, as son of a Marine and a small business owner looking for his own slice of The American Dream as he defined it for himself, was-- 365 days prior to this moment-- a "man of The Right"; at this moment with Lindsay, he is a "Man of God," and as such he transcends mere politics.

Story Arc So Far
Our Heroes, recently reconfigured as the reduced and more mobile
Felix Legion, cross into Texas and reach the "midway point" of Old Route 66, but not before passing Amarillo, Texas, US along the way.
Zapfic entries for this week were made to supplement (if not "re-do") the New Mexico portion of the ride east along Old Route 66. Entry 450 both closes out the Lindsay Etxeberria turmoil subplot and calls back to David Guardia's DRAW25 UNO experience with the uncanny Manny Rey. Entry 456, meanwhile is a reminder of how different former far-left activist Lindsay is from David Guardia, son of a Marine Corps veteran who had served in a Force Recon unit. The other 5 zapfic entries give an opportunity for both David and Rhonda Bella Guardia to tell the rest of Felix Legion how they had almost met each other in Defiance, Ohio, US when David stops the crew before reaching Gallup.
