What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.
More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

As we rode through Shamrock, we noticed how picturesque this Texas town was. Not as much as Tucumcari, but definitely filled with eye candy. Rhonda photographed herself by the redhead mural at Spinning Jenny's House of Music.
---
🏍️ Regular followers of GHAWG know that Rhonda Bella Guardia (formerly Rhonda Bella, before she married Rhonda Bella in Riverside, California, US) know that she was inspired by a stand-alone zapfic entry unrelated to The GHAWG Universe. That zapfic defined 3 characteristics for her: she was taller than most men, she had flowing red hair, and she had freckles. For Rat Bike (at the time, simply GHAWG), I hard-coded her height to be 2 meters (like Darth Vader) since David, her future husband, began the serial as some schmoe of average height or shorter. Is Rhonda freckled? I hadn't considered this detail for GHAWG, so it can go either way should GHAWG evolve into something more literary or cinematic. The flowing red hair defines Rhonda as much as her height. |

Over 100 miles after we left Amarillo, Texas behind, we reached Texola, Oklahoma. What the small town lacked in size, it overcompensated with murals & painted signs reminding travelers of its place on Rte 66 (Texola, Route 66).
---
🏍️ Despite having been put out of commission in the middle 1980s, Route 66 still held it's place in American pop culture. Many places along what is beleieved to have been Route 66 make use of this detail in promoting both tourism and commerce to their areas. Even towns and businesses young enough to be considered Generation Alpha are quick to capitalize on their connection to the Route 66 of yesteryear. Many businesses have tangible connections to the legendary road, and many more curate any and all things related to this touchstone of Americana. Many other places lack these two qualities, but the more than make up for it with creative artwork; that includes paintings and murals.

Erick, Oklahoma is over 113 miles from Amarillo, Texas. During a brief stop we took pics at the iconic Sandhills Curiosity Shop. Hext was at our 120 mile/day goal, but we rode I-40 an extra 26 miles until we reached Elk City.
---
🏍️ When David Guardia was riding alone, he was covering hundreds of miles at a time. When he picked up the uncanny Manny Rey as his co-pilot, their average riding distance per day was cut down. When David resumed his riding with Rhonda Bella as his co-pilot, They covered 765 miles over 4 days. Initially, when Our Heroes consisted of The Mongols led by Harry Hoqualogue together with what would become Felix Legion, daily riding averaged 100 miles/day. Starting in the Pacific Northwest, daily riding averaged 60 miles/day. This stayed the riding goal in Rat Bike until New Mexico, when the downsized crew consisting of David's people assumed the identity of Felix Legion. This is when daily riding distances were increased to 120 miles/day. |

Although the next day we would only ride about 120 miles, we'd be making many stops along the way. Edmond was our ultimate stop, just 13 miles north of Oklahoma City. Before OKC were Clinton, Weatherford, Hydro, El Reno, Yukon.
---
🏍️ If we go by the lyrics to the song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," the only place representing Oklahoma is Oklahoma City. Most people wouldn't care about this if all that is done is listen to the song. Since I chose to make Route 66 an integral part of The GHAWG Universe-- especially David Guardia's Epic Ride-- that wouldn't be enough. Just from a riding standpoint Oklahoma had much more to offer, and it had something for everyone.
5️⃣0️⃣3️⃣ 2024-July-04 00:06:42
About 1.5 miles east of Hydro, US Route 66 forked left from I-40. Nearly 2 miles later, close to Casino Oklahoma, it rejoined I-40. Again US Route 66 forked from I-40, and we passed the Giants Display 7.3 miles west of El Reno.
---
🏍️ Most of Old Route 66 tracked along Interstate 40, but stretches of Route 66 can be found more or less parallel to I-40. Where this was the case. Felix Legion would choose to ride the older road. Anyone can ride along an Interstate road (or a "superhighway") and cover vast distances relatively quickly, but to discover more about "America" it's better to travel along the state and county roads. This makes it easier to find tourist attractions of all kinds. Not much quirkiness can be found on the Interstates.
5️⃣0️⃣4️⃣ 2024-July-05 00:10:42
The 8 miles before we reached the Giants Display was our last time using I-40. We rode along US Rte 66 through Yukon all the way into Oklahoma City. For another 14 mi. we rode north to Edmond near University of Central Oklahoma.
---
🏍️ When it comes to tracking Old Route 66, Interstate 40 yields to Interstate 44 when it's time to get back on the "superhighway" crossing the state. Going from OKC to Edmond can be compared to going from Los Angeles to San Bernardino in California only over a much shorter distance. Flagstaff to Winona in Arizona is a distance similar to what's covered here, but OKC is much more city-like and Edmond is a much larger place.
5️⃣0️⃣5️⃣ 2024-July-06 00:01:42
Arcadia was the first town we rode past after we left Edmond in the morning. After passing Lake Arcadia we checked out the Arcadia Round Barn (restored in 1992) and OK County 66 at John's Place. Seven miles east is Luther.
---
🏍️ As with most of this week's zapfic entries, this features more traveling. In about 2 days of story time Felix Legion had crossed half of Oklahoma. Even if the zapfic serial feels as it it's crawling, the characters themselves are covering lots of territory as they ride through Oklahoma.

Story Arc So Far
Felix Legion continues it's ride east along Old Route 66. It rides out of the misshapen Texas Panhandle to cover more than half of Oklahoma.
