Manchester United is a club of heritage. It has been around the English footballing landscape for well over a century now. And in this long period the club has won a lot. 20 premier league titles they say. The most of any club on English soil. Apart from these league titles they have won other domestic and continental cups too. And amidst all these successes, the club mainly thanks three distinct personalities. Three men in their tenures have formed this club's DNA. What it is today is owed largely to them. That's why Manchester United is often called the Club of Three Coaches.
Manchester United, The Red Devils of Football. After the departure of an angry gentleman named Sir Alex Ferguson, the club actually never could not stand up straight in the time after him. However, this incident is not new. The Red Devils have suffered three such catastrophic events in history. The first time after 1910 to 1950, the second time from 1970 to 1990 and the third time was after Alex Ferguson leaving. Manchester United have never relied on players. United have always relied on coaches, always. At least the stats and the history say so. To give a small example, Ole or Mourinho or Rangnik's team is no less than the team that for United was playing in the UCL final in 2011 under Alex Ferguson. Every time the Red Devils fell in the transition period, one Englishman and two Scotsmen rescued them. According to statistics, Manchester United have won a total of 66 trophies in their history. Of which Big Trophies are 20 League titles, 3 champions league titles and 12 FA Cups. These 20 league trophies have been won by the three coaches together.
First was Ernest Mangnell who won 2 leagues titles with Man United. Then came Sir Matt Busby who won 5 league titles and then the rest of it, 13 to be precise, were all Alex Ferguson's achievement. In no club do I think only 3 coaches have won the league, and no one else. The three champions league titles that are in Manchester United's honor are also sharer between Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson. If we calculate separately, Ernest Mangnall's United has won 5 trophies, Matt Busby won 13 trophies and Fergie has a total of 38 trophies. In other words, only 3 coaches have won 56 of the total 66 trophies of United. These three have coached United for a total of 60 years. Manchester United as a club is about 144 years old. In other words, the Red Devils have won a total of 10 trophies in the remaining 84 years. None of which is the league or the Champions League. And the Red Devils have been playing in the Second Division a few times in these 84 years. So the question is, where is the problem with Manchester United? Is it not having a father figure like Fergie or Busby, or is it not having a forward line like Best - Law - Charlton or Ronaldo - Rooney - Scholes - Giggs? On the other hand. Nine coaches have contributed and won a total of 19 league titles at Liverpool, United's biggest rivals, and four have those coaches share the glory of the 6 champions league titles.
The answer to the question of what is United's problem is still unknown. Many still don't know what's the missing piece of the puzzle. But United have for long lacked a pure Scottish mastermind in the Red Devils dugout. It is unknown that when will United finally break from the stereotype of hiring Scottish coaches. But breaking is very important to happen soon. Because the red devils are still living in the old ages, still reminiscing the golden days of history shared with the likes of Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.
