“When you stay hydrated, you're not as hungry. Sometimes, when you think you're hungry, you're actually thirsty.”
Mandy Ingber
Thirsty
Every January 14, since 1856 and with the sole exception of the years 2021 and 2022 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the small and melancholic town of Santa Rosa, dresses up to bid farewell to its Patron Saint, the Divine Sheperdess (Divina Pastora), whose image, made three centuries ago in Seville, travels on the shoulders of the parishioners a distance of about 7.5 kilometers to reach the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Carmen in the city of Barquisimeto.
This multitudinous event belonging to Catholicism is considered one of the largest religious processions in the world due to the large number of people who participate, estimating a little more than 2.7 million attendees in this recent edition, last Sunday.
Motivated by the large number of participants and the high temperatures that usually occur on this day, a large number of people and companies donate water and non-carbonated beverages to contribute to the hydration of the parishioners, but also, a considerable number of small and medium-sized merchants sell drinks and food that they sell to the attendees in different parts of the route.
In these photos taken near the cathedral, hours before the arrival of the Divine Sheperdess, a vendor of the traditional "cepillados" or "raspados" (slush) can be seen, trying to quench the thirst of those who approached her.
