Hello and welcome back friends. We had seen about processor and its function in last class. In this blog we are going to learn about next peripheral device of a computer system i.e RAM(Random Access Memory).
A RAM is a temporary storage device which stores data for a small time till the computer shut downs. As soon as a computer shut down the data stored in it gets erased automatically, It is also known as primary memory of a computer device. The speed of any computer also depends upon the capacity of its RAM, as high as the capacity of RAM in a computer system it will work efficiently and vice versa.
TYPES OF RAM:-
On the basis of technology and its shape RAM is classified in following types:-
1)SD- RAM(Synchronized Dynamic Random Access Memory)
2)DDR-RAM(Double Dynamic Rate Random Access Memory)
3)DDR2- RAM
4)DDR3-RAM
5)DDR4-RAM
Currently DDR4-RAMs are being used in many computer system as it is the latest technology
SD RAM is the oldest RAM which was used in 486 motherboards, after that as the technology gets advanced DDR-RAM replaces the SD-RAM which were being used in 845 and 865 motherboards, further with more improvements when 915, 945, 965, G31 mother boards came into existence DDR-RAM was replaced by DDR2-RAM. After a period of time these mother board gets replaced with G41 and H61 mother boards in which DDR3-RAM comes in light and were used in these motherboards, Now advanced technology and high speed accuracy system is launched where previous motherboards are replaced with M110 motherboards in which DDR4-RAMs are in use.
CAPACITY OF RAM:-
A RAM can be of 32 mb(mega bytes) to 8GB(giga bytes) or even more
1)The capacity of an SD-RAM was of 32 mb minimum to 128 mb maximum
2)The capacity of DDR1-RAM was 128 mb minimum to 1GB maximum
3)The capacity of DDR2-RAM gets increased from 256 mb minimum to 1 GB maimum
4)With the advance technology the capacity of DDR3- RAM gets increased from 1GB minimum to 4 GBmaximum
5)Today in this fast and advanced technology world the capacity of DDR4-RAM ranges from 2GB minimum to 8GB maximum
As much as the capacity a RAM holds its efficiency increases accordingly
WHERE A RAM IS PLACED IN A COMPUTER SYSTEM:-
A RAM is placed in the RAM slot present in mother board, old motherboards were designed to place 2-4 RAM simultaneously with that number of RAM slots, but at present motherboards are designed to take a minimum space in computer cabinets in which there are maximum 2 RAM slots are provided for RAM to be installed, below is a image indicating where a RAM slot exist in motherboard
I hope you might have learned the basics of RAM here and might be able to identify a RAM. Below is an image of RAM in which its capacity and type is written, just check it out and answer what is the capacity of this RAM and which type of RAM it is?
Options:-
• DDR2-RAM with 1 GB capacity
• DDR3-RAM with 2 GB capacity
• DDR1-RAM with 1GB capacity
• DDR4-RAM with 4GB capacity
