Hello dear friends of steemit with the purpose of making a contribution in we want to talk about the tamarillo, better known in Venezuela as the tree tomato, fruit that my mother usually includes in our daily diet.
The tamarillo is one of those exotic or tropical fruits whose shape and appearance reminds a lot of the tomato, which is why it is popularly known as the tree tomato, french tomato or kumomandra.
NUTRITIONAL VALUE
The tamarillo is a storehouse of various minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and other nutrients (such as dietary fiber) that can offer excellent health benefits. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and phytonutrients.
Phytonutrients in tamarillo are mainly phenolic, anthocyanins, carotenoids and flavonoids. Together they make tamarillo high in antioxidant activity. The color of the fruit differs according to the phytochemicals present. The red variety offers more anthocyanins, while the yellow variety is rich in carotenoids. In addition to these, the tamarillo contains citric acid and malic acid that improves its acid taste.
WHAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE TAMARILLO TREE:
The plant is a fast growing tree that grows up to 5 meters. The maximum production is reached after 4 years, and the life expectancy is approximately 12 years.
The tree usually forms a single vertical trunk with lateral branches. Flowers and fruits hang from the side branches. The leaves are large, simple and perennial, and have a strong pungent odor. The flowers are pink and form clusters of 10 to 50 flowers. They produce from 1 to 6 fruits per bunch.
Plants can bear fruit without cross-pollination, but the flowers are fragrant and attract insects. Cross-pollination seems to improve fruit set. The roots are shallow and not very pronounced, therefore, the plant does not tolerate drought stress and can be damaged by strong winds.
The Tamarillos will hybridize with many other Solanaceae, although the hybrid fruits will be sterile and unpleasant in some cases.

HOW TO USE THE TAMARILLO.
Before eating or using tamarillos, wash the fruits in cold water, dry them with a soft cloth and remove the stem.
A tamarillo is typically eaten by cutting it in half and using a teaspoon to extract the sweet and juicy flesh. The skin can be peeled like tomatoes.
You can also boil the tamarillos first in hot water for two or three minutes, and cool them by immersing them immediately in cold water. With a knife, make a small cut on the surface of the tamarillo and peel the fruit with your fingers.
The tamarillo can be used as a tomato. You can eat it raw, put it in salad, make smoothies or juices, fruit jam, jellies, sauces, pizza dressing and any dish that usually includes tomatoes, you can also cook, grill, bake or boil.
In my particular I like to consume it in juice.
