What about us?
I was in the bathroom this morning preparing for church. Suddenly a thought ran through my mind about the less privileged and the poor people struggling to survive. As a church person, today being that all Christians go to church. I knew that many others were within that time frame preparing for church. Beyond just going to church, the majority of Christians go to the church with big envelopes to offer to God. Meanwhile, some people can't afford a square meal a day in their neighborhood. Yet we seem to be too religious to give to churches that mostly are already well-fed. When this happens the poor ones are saying “What about us”?
I am one of the proponents who believe that the best people to give our gifts are the less privileged and the motherless in society. It is not easy I must say. I know that religious folks may counter this but even Jesus who is the progenitor of this religion taught about giving to the poor even to our enemies but today, we seem to have deviated from the teaching to the other teaching that promotes giving to the priest or the pastor. I am not in any way against giving to the house of God, but if we must give, let us also consider the motherless, the less opportune ones.
The main blessing in giving is when we give to those we know can't give us back. This is pure religion. In our society, we give to get things back from the person we give. This kind of giving is hypocritical and it carries no natural blessing. Just like the saying goes, all fingers are not the same. Some were born with a silver spoon, while others were not. It is the place of the rich to take care of the poor ones in their environment.
The best kind of investment is one invested in the people, especially the less privileged ones. This kind of investment yields massively and the benefits go beyond a generation. That means the next generation stands to benefit from such investments. It is not enough to be a religious folk, and if your practice does not include giving to the poor then you are not doing well.
Kindness is a natural disposition in people, and it is evident in having compassion on people which compels one to reach out to the other humans for help and support. Every day while eating, always remember that there are people who have no food to eat and instead of thanking God that you have food to eat only, pray that kind-hearted people reach out to the less privileged. Every time you always open your tap to drink water from it, think about others who have no access to clean water. Let your heart go to those who have no place to lay their heads.
Every time these people see you spending money lavishly, what runs through their minds is “What about us”
