This post is NOT a paid promotion of any of the products or brands mentioned in it. I am not being paid or otherwise incentivised to share this information. If I were, I would have stated it very clearly in that case.
First of all, I need to make a confession: I heavily rely on energy drinks for productivity. The first thing I do in the morning, as soon as I wake up, is to grab an energy drink. Without the energy boost to help me start my day, I would spend the rest of it as a sour-mood low-energy zombie.
I am not exactly addicted to this type of drinks – I could (and have, on occasion) do without them. But it wouldn’t be as cheerful and enthusiastic version of me without them. So you can say that I’m at least “dependent” on them, especially when I need to feel extrovert, social and productive in equal parts.
Of course, I am also mindful of my health, so I don’t consume just any energy drinks (definitely not Red Bull – sorry, all Red Bull fans!). This is my usual go to, when it comes to a relatively “healthy” energy boost:
The things I like about this particular brand are:
- Taste (not horrible)
- No sugar
- No taurine (that’s why I don’t drink Red Bull)
- 2500 mg of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) – organic compounds with multiple proven health benefits – in each can
- 400 mg carnitine
- CAFFEINE!! (my favourite!)
- Vitamins: B6, C, pantothenic acid (a form of B5-vitamin), biotin (or B7), B12
- Reasonable price (about 1 euro a can, whereas other similar-quality drinks sell at €1.50–€2.00 a can)
Now, I’m about to test something new!
I have learnt by now that this natural energy drink, created by Gamma Labs, is well-known and popular among the amateur and pro-gamers alike. But I heard about G FUEL only recently, from PewDiePie’s videos, and decided to give it a try. I ordered it three weeks ago and the package has finally made it here all the way from the US and through the Swedish customs:
This is what I found inside:
- A “Starter Kit” (a cute lilac shaker cup and seven different flavours of G FUEL)
- A “Premium Pack” with 20 most popular flavours
- A free gift (since my order exceeded $35): three flavours, most popular among PewDiePie’s fans.
Since this was the first time I was ordering G FUEL, I decided not to buy a larger tub with the drink powder, but instead try and sample as many different flavours as I can. So that next time I’ll know what I like and what I don’t, and can order my favourite flavours in bulk, in tubs filled with powder, instead of these cute small one-portion packs:
I plan to make a spreadsheet and grade one new flavour a day, depending on how much I liked it: 1 – not much; 2 – it’s okay; 3 – love it!
(I would try one tonight, but it’s getting late here and I don’t want risk it. Normally I don’t consume any caffeinated drinks past 5 pm)
Now, let’s review what’s good about these drinks:
- Light package. Since they’re sold in powder form, I could easily carry home the package with 30 packs. When I buy my usual energy drinks, I rarely can carry more than 6 in my hands from the supermarkets.
- No sugar
- 19 different antioxidants from fruit extracts
- Gluten-free
- 10 different vitamins
- only 5 g carbs (25 kCal per serving)
- reasonable price (it came down to roughly $1.50 per serving, including the shipment costs, for my first order)
Also, although it’s about the drinks themselves, I really loved the user experience on their website. The gamification of the purchasing process was smooth and fun, and was actually quite enjoyable, believe it or not!
