I returned to Penafiel Park for a short walk and to enjoy the afternoon. I've been there several times before. Perhaps that's why I like that space. There's nothing new, nor is there a need to discover anything specific. I simply enter the park and let myself wander.

Voltei ao parque de Penafiel para caminhar um pouco e aproveitar a tarde. Já lá tinha estado várias vezes antes. Talvez seja por isso que gosto daquele espaço. Não existe novidade nem a necessidade de descobrir alguma coisa específica. Entro simplesmente no parque e deixo-me andar.
The atmosphere that day was calmer. There were people scattered everywhere, but without any commotion. Families sat on the grass, children ran among the trees, couples strolled slowly along the dirt paths. A boy played ball alone on one of the larger lawns while his parents watched from a distance, almost without speaking.

O ambiente naquele dia estava mais calmo. Havia pessoas espalhadas por todo o lado, mas sem confusão. Famílias sentadas na relva, crianças a correr entre as árvores, casais a passear devagar pelos caminhos de terra batida. Um miúdo jogava à bola sozinho num dos relvados maiores enquanto os pais observavam à distância, quase sem falar.
One of the first things you notice in that park is the water. The small stream runs through the space, almost hidden among trees, bamboo, and old stone walls already covered in moss and dampness. The water flowed clean and low, so transparent that it was possible to perfectly see the stones at the bottom. There were still areas, almost mirrored, and others where the current created small, constant sounds. I stood there for some time, standing by the bank. The air was fresh in that area, humid, with the smell of wet earth and old leaves.

Uma das primeiras coisas que se nota naquele parque é a água. O pequeno curso de água atravessa o espaço quase escondido entre árvores, bambus e muros antigos de pedra já cobertos por musgo e humidade. A água corria limpa e baixa, tão transparente que era possível ver perfeitamente as pedras no fundo. Havia zonas mais paradas, quase espelhadas, e outras onde a corrente criava pequenos sons constantes. Fiquei ali algum tempo parado junto à margem. O ar era fresco naquela zona, húmido, com cheiro a terra molhada e folhas velhas.
The trees completely define the park. Some are enormous, very old, others lighter and more open. The willows leaned over the water, their long branches almost touching the current. In other areas, bamboos created shade and a unique sound whenever the wind passed.
Further on, I came across a small stone installation in the middle of the lawn. Simple. So simple that I don't remember seeing it before.

As árvores acabam por definir completamente o parque. Algumas enormes, muito antigas, outras mais leves e abertas. Os salgueiros inclinavam-se sobre a água e os ramos longos quase a tocam na corrente. Noutras zonas, os bambus criavam sombras e um som muito próprio sempre que o vento passava.
Mais à frente cruzei-me com uma pequena instalação em pedra no meio do relvado. Simples. Tão simples que não me lembro de a ter visto antes.
The path continues along wide, well-maintained walkways, surrounded by trees that are already quite green at this time of year. Some people walked without haste, others simply sat on benches staring into space or at their cell phones. I also saw many people taking advantage of the space to run or walk their dogs. The park has this ability to cater to everyone at the same time without seeming crowded.

O percurso continua por caminhos largos, bastante cuidados, rodeados de árvores já muito verdes nesta altura do ano. Algumas pessoas caminhavam sem pressa, outras estavam simplesmente sentadas nos bancos a olhar para o vazio ou para o telemóvel. Vi também muita gente a aproveitar o espaço para correr ou passear cães. O parque tem essa capacidade de servir toda a gente ao mesmo tempo sem parecer cheio.
One of the spots I like most is the area covered by wisteria. I had seen them there before, but never so laden with fruit. The flowers hung above the path in intense shades of violet, creating almost a natural canopy. Fallen petals piled up on the ground, carried by the wind. People stopped to take pictures, naturally. And although I normally avoid these more popular settings, I perfectly understood why there. It was impossible to pass by indifferently.

Um dos pontos que mais gosto é a zona coberta pelas glicínias. Já as tinha visto ali noutras alturas, mas nunca tão carregadas. As flores pendiam por cima do caminho em tons violetas muito intensos, criando quase um teto natural. No chão acumulavam-se pétalas caídas que o vento ia arrastando. Havia pessoas a parar para fotografar, naturalmente. E apesar de normalmente evitar esse tipo de cenários mais procurados, ali percebi perfeitamente porquê. Era impossível passar indiferente.
Not everything was perfect, of course. Some areas of the lawn seemed less well-maintained than on other visits, and I found some forgotten litter near the water – a small amount, but enough to stand out. I also missed having more benches in certain shaded areas.
Even so, I still like the overall feeling of the park.
When I left in the late afternoon, the sky was beginning to get heavier and the wind was picking up among the trees. This walk was enough to clear my head and relax.

Nem tudo estava perfeito, claro. Algumas zonas do relvado pareciam menos cuidadas do que noutras visitas e encontrei algum lixo esquecido perto da água, coisa pouca, mas suficiente para destoar. Também senti falta de mais bancos em certas áreas de sombra.
Ainda assim, continuo a gostar da sensação geral do parque.
Quando saí já ao final da tarde, o céu começava a ficar mais pesado e o vento levantava-se entre as árvores . Este passeio foi o suficiente para descansar a cabeça e relaxar.
