Hello there.
Today I'll share my battle using Legionnaire Alvar. But first, I will share some of my thoughts regarding the monster. From my experience, I rarely use Legionnaire Alvar in my Bronze/Silver battles. This is because I don't have it, and I think it needs some combo units to maximize its potential. It is a Neutral, Legendary, Chaos Legion card. At 1 BCX, it is a 9 cost monster with 2 Melee damage, 2 Speed, 8 Armor, and 6 HP. It has the Void Armor ability.
Being a neutral monster it can be used with all elements, as long as the rulesets allow it. Being Melee, it can benefit from Fire's Tarsa. The Void Armor can use the added armor from Kelya. His overall stats are pretty average for a Legendary card, but the combo cards are what make him work.
Legionnaire Alvar is usually partnered with Repair units, as well as Resurrection abilities. This is why he is very powerful with Life in high rank battles. But in Bronze/Silver, where it is frequently low mana battles, it is difficult to fully assemble this lineup.
In higher levels, Legionnaire Alvar gets Giant Killer, Demoralize, and Deathblow. The added utility gives him more uses, and serves as a better counter to a lot of teams.
Without further ado, let's get into the battle.
The Ruleset
It is early into the season and I have just recovered my mana after using a lot of it before EOS. This was a Novice battle with no rulesets. A 99 mana battle is the max amount, so it is a bit of who has the better cards. Since it is a 99 mana battle, I'll just use all of my high cost cards, and hope I can beat theirs.
Fire will most likely focus on Melee. Water can go Melee or Magic. Earth will most likely go Magic. Life can go Ranged. Death and Dragon can use any of the three.
The Lineup
| Card | Ability | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Increases the Speed of ally monsters by 2, and grants the Pierce and Scattershot abilities. | I am expecting a Taunt monster from the opponent, so I used Scattershot to bypass it. | |
| Void Armor | If the opponents use Magic, I am hoping Alvar can buy me enough time to kill all the backline. | |
| Protect | Arkemis adds armor to Alvar, as well as protect my backline from the enemy's scattershot attacks. | |
| Close Range | High damage and Close Range, it is the perfect as the third tank | |
| Blast | Blast with scattershot is pretty good. This helps me deal more damage even though I have spread damage. | |
| Opportunity, Camouflage | I lose the opportunity, but the high attack and speed should help me still deal a lot of damage. | |
| Last Stand, Close Range | Tinderlock is my last resort and my backline tank. He should tank some damage from the back, or get stronger if the opponent goes front to back. |
For me, among the cards I have rented out, this is the most flexible team I can make. Alvar can deal with the Magic damage. Arkemis can protect against the scattershot. My Pierce can deal with Rathe. My Scattershot can work against Taunt teams. Additionally, other players won't expect a ranged team in a 99 mana battle.
The Battle
The Matchup
My opponent decided to go with a very questionable Death team. I don't know what they are trying to do, so I'm thinking it's a bot. Ever Hungry Skull dies immediately to a Regal Peryton. They have 2 Melee monsters that don't do anything. Their backline is very susceptible to Sneak/Snipe/Opportunity damage. Early on I think it's an easy win for me.
End of Round 1
I might have put too much thought into my team. For this opponent, a simple focused damage strategy would have been better. Front-to-back, sneaks, snipes, or opportunity would have worked well. My Scattershot is also trolling me by hitting the three low priority targets, and not hitting the three backline units that can actually do damage. I think the game is still in the bag though.
End of Round 2
We finally killed one unit, and a lot of the opponent's monsters have low HP. Only my Tinderlock has taken any damage, so this is really looking good for me.
End of Round 3
They were able to kill my Legionnair Alvar, but I think that's the only one they'll get. My monsters have 4 speed, so they will all attack before the opponent's monsters, and the damage should be more than enough to kill them
End of the Battle
I will have to say that the battle wasn't even close. I kind of just overwhelmed my opponent with high mana cards. They also didn't really create a good team since some of their units were not doing anything for a while.
The Result
Conclusion
While this battle was one sided, it shows how having a more varied set of cards can easily help you win. I was able to rent some high mana cards that easily outvalued the opponent. In a strategy standpoint, I think it is good to try to think abou the different strategies the opponent can do.
