This road is not just an ordinary route, as one might think. As you walk along it step by step, it invites you into a completely different world where you can sense the traces of its millennia-old history embedded in the cobblestones. More often than not, we only learn about the historical ruins in the city we live in and the stories they left behind in the past later on—just like on the Ancient Paved Road...

Last weekend, we set out early in the morning to explore the Ancient Döşeme Road. As the first rays of sunlight touched the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, we headed from central Antalya toward Burdur. The Ancient Döşeme Road, also known as Maximianupolis, is located in the Kovanlık neighborhood of Antalya’s Döşemealtı district. To reach this location, follow the road from Antalya toward Burdur, turn right at the Kovanlık neighborhood turnoff, and after a short drive, you’ll arrive at the Ancient Döşeme Road. By turning right from the Burdur road toward Kovanlık neighborhood, you’ll reach the Ancient Döşeme Road. The journey from the center of Antalya to the Ancient Döşeme Road takes approximately 45 minutes.
Geçtiğimiz hafta sonu Antik Döşeme Yolu'nu keşfetmek için sabahın erken saatlerinde yola çıktık. Güneşin ilk ışıkları Torosların eteklerine düşerken Antalya merkezden Burdur istikametinde doğru ilerledik. Antik Döşeme Yolu diğer adıyla Maximianupolis, Antalya'nın Döşemealtı ilçesine bağlı Kovanlık Mahallesi'nde yer alıyor. Bu noktaya ulaşmak için Antalya'dan Burdur yolunu takip edip, Kovanlık Mahallesi sapağından sağa dönerek kısa bir yolculukla Atik Döşeme Yolu'na varıyoruz. Burdur yolundan sağa Kovanlı mahallesine saparak Antik Döşeme Yoluna ulaşıyoruz. Antik Döşeme yolu ile Antalya merkez yaklaşık 45 dakika sürüyor.
As we approach the Kovanlık neighborhood, the character of life changes instantly. The high-rise apartment buildings and the concrete landscape of stone we saw in the city center vanish in an instant. Instead, we are greeted by highlands stretching as far as the eye can see, majestic mountain ranges, single-story detached homes with gardens blending into nature, and flocks of sheep grazing peacefully in the countryside... The scent of manure and the scent of nature in this quiet landscape draw us right into the heart of village life. As we travel along the dirt road, the sight of the grass by the roadside, the colors of the flowers along the edge, and the patches of dry earth all reveal the full beauty of nature.
Kovanlık mahallesinde yaklaşıtıkça yaşamın şekli bir anda değişiyor. Merkezde gördüğümüz o yüksek apartmanlar ve taşlardan oluşan beton görüntü bir anda kayboluyor. Onun yerine göz alabildiğine uzanan yaylalar, heybetli dağ silsileleri, tek katlı müstakil ve bahçeleriyle doğaya karışmış evler ile kırlarda huzur içinde otlamaya çalışan koyun sürüleri karşılıyor bizi... Bu sessiz coğrafyanın tezek kokusu ve doğa kokusu bizi köy hayatının tam da içine sokuyor. Toprak yolda ilerlerken yol kenarındaki otların görüntüsü kenardaki çiçeklerin renkleri ve kurumuş toprak parçaları hepsi doğanın tüm güzelliğini gözler önüne seriyor.
The Ancient Paved Road resembles an ancient city nestled among the greenery on a hillside, set against a vast expanse of lush, green terrain. On top of this flat, green, open land stands a structure built from ancient stones, the remains of which are still visible. This protected area, formed by towering stones, looks truly magnificent. On our way here, we met an elderly man from the village. He was grazing his sheep here. When he saw us, he greeted us. We stopped and chatted. This ancient road has been here since very ancient times. In ancient times, this was an important transportation route connecting the regions of Pisidia and Pamphylia. A gorge runs beneath this road, which is made of paving stones. They called this gorge Döşeme Boğazı. The flat area beneath the road is called Döşemealtı. The name of the Döşemealtı district also comes from this.
Antik Döşeme Yolu son derece büyük bir yeşillik arazinin üzerine kurulmuş olan yamaca doğru kurulmuş yeşilliklerin içindeki antik bir kent görünümündedir. Düz topraklı yeşil geniş bir arazinin üstünde hala kalıntıları duran eski taşlardan oluşmuş bir yapı var. Yüksek taşlardan oluşan bu korunaklı bölge çok muazzam görünüyor. Buraya gelirken yolda köyde yaşayan bir amcayla karşılaştık. Burada koyunlarını otlatıyordu. Bizi görünce selam verdi. Bizde durduk ve konuştuk. Bu antik yol çok eski zamanlara kadar burdaymış. Antik dönemlerde burası Pisidya ve Pamfilya bölgelerini bibirine bağlayan önemli bir ulaşım yoluymuş. Döşeme taşlardan oluşan bu yolun altından bir boğaz geçiyormuş. Bu boğaza da Döşeme Boğazı demişler. Yolun altında kalan düzlüğe de Döşemealtı demişler. Döşemealtı ilçesinin adı da buradan geliyormuş.
Paved stones, mingled with the grass, stretch along the path all the way up the mountainside. Along the roadside are ancient structures, ancient cities, and tombstones scattered and broken here and there. The end of the Ancient Road, built during the Roman period, extends all the way to the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. You can also reach a spot called Döşeme Boğazı through the ruins from the Ancient Period. As you walk among the large and small stones, the sight of the ruins—bearing the traces of the past—blending into nature is mesmerizing. While walking over the stones, there is also a breathtaking natural beauty all around. The grasses growing among the stones, the flower species along the roadside that I’ve never seen before, and the prickly plants I hesitated to touch add a unique beauty to this ancient path. There is no information about the ancient structures along the roadside. We don’t know when or how they were built, or for what purpose, but these structures have carried the traces of the past into the present amidst the green landscape.
Otların arasına karışmış döşemeli taşlar yol boyunca dağın yamacına kadar ilerliyor. Yol kenarlarında antik yapılar, antik kentler ve sağa sola dağılmış ve parçalanmış olan mezar taşları var. Romalılar Döneminde yapılan Antik Yolun sonu Toros Dağlarının ilk başladığı noktalara kadar uzanıyor. Antik Dönemde yapılmış kalıntıların içinden Döşeme Boğazı adı verilen noktaya da gidiliyor. İrili ufaklı taşların arasında yürürken geçmişin izlerini taşıyan kalıntıların doğaya karışmış görüntüsü insanı mest ediyor. Taşların üstünden yürürken etrafta da göz alıcı bir doğal güzellik var. Taşların arasında yetişen otlar, yolun kenarında daha önce hiç görmediğim çiçek türleri ve dokunmaya tereddüt ettiğim dikenli bitkiler bu eski yola ayrı bir güzellik katıyor. Yolun kenarındaki antik yapılar hakkında herhangi bir bilgi yok. Ne zaman ve nasıl yapıldı? Hangi amaçla yapıldı bilemiyoruz ama, yapılar yeşil doğanın içinde geçmişin izlerini günümüze taşımış.
This path, approximately 4 meters wide, has been used as a trade and migration route by many civilizations—from the Romans to the Byzantines, and from the Seljuks to the Ottomans. So we are not the only ones to have set foot here. This ancient road bears the footprints of thousands of years of history. As we proceed along the road and approach the Taurus Mountains, pine forests lie on one side, while valleys and trails stretch out on the other. In some sections of the road, the paved stones are arranged like a painting. Along the edges of the road and in between, you can see ancient sarcophagi, water cisterns, and the remains of stone columns. When we look at these details, we realize that this is not just a road; it is also a living space.
Yaklaşık 4 metre genişliğindeki bu yolu, Roma' dan, Bizans'a Selçuklu'dan Osmanlı'ya kadar birçok medeniyetler ticaret ve göç yolu olarak kullanmışlar. Yani buraya ayak basan sadece bizler değiliz. Bu antik yolda binlerce yıllık geçmişin ayak izleri var. Yolda ilerlerken Toros Dağlarına yaklaştıkça, bir yanda çam ormanları, diğer tarafta vadiler ve patikalar yer alır. Yolun bazı bölümlerinde döşemeli taşlar sanki bir tablo gibi dizilmiş. Yolun kenarlarında ve aralarda eski lahitler, su sarnıçları ve taş sütun kalıntılarını görülüyor. Bu detaylara baktığımızda buranın sadece bir yol değil; aynı zamanda bir yaşam alanı olduğunu fark ediyoruz.
The vegetation and geography of this region also struck us as very different... With the soil turning red, the riverbeds drying up and turning into swamps, and the colorful daisies clinging to life, nature was putting on a beautiful display. Among these flowers and grasses, we also had a little guest. The turtle we spotted among the grasses had set out to find a new home.
Bu bölgenin bitki örtüsü ve coğrafik yapısı da çok farklı geldi bize... Kırmızı rengine dönüşmeye çalışan toprak, kurumuş ve bataklık haline almaya hazırlanan dere yatakları ve bir arada tutunmaya çalışan o rengarenk papatya çiçekleriyle doğa kendini çok güzel gösteriyor. Bu çiçeklerin ve otların arasında birde küçük bir misafirimiz vardı. Otların arasında gördüğümüz kamlumbağa kendine yeni bir yer bulmak için yola çıkmıştı.
As we turned away from the Ancient Paved Road, we looked back one last time. What we saw here was not merely a collection of old stones. It was a true time tunnel, carrying the traces of the past, the lives once lived here, and the cultural heritage into the present. Until we meet again; stay with love and nature.
