Some time ago, I had the chance to visit Gijón, a city in northern Spain, and I was genuinely surprised by how beautiful and unique it was. Located right next to the Atlantic Ocean, it had this moody, wild vibe—something I didn’t quite expect from Spain, which I had always associated with sunshine and warmth.
When I visited, the weather was actually quite cold and rainy, but I think that made the experience even more atmospheric. There’s something magical about the ocean under a grey sky, with waves crashing and clouds rolling in. It felt powerful and calming all at once, like the city was quietly shaped by the sea.
One of the biggest surprises was finding a huge cliff right next to the city. It’s not every day you walk through a town and suddenly come across something so dramatic and raw in the landscape.
Despite the drizzle, I took out my camera and snapped a few shots. There was a quietness in the streets and along the coast that made the photos feel almost cinematic. I love how weather can completely change the feeling of a place.
Even though it wasn’t the sunniest trip, it was still so worth it. Gijón gave me something different than I expected—a mix of coastal beauty, urban calmness, and dramatic natural features. It’s a reminder that you don’t always need perfect weather to have a meaningful travel experience or to take photos that you’ll remember.
