Being a child there must be some memories that we don't remember again and sometimes some memories come like a flash in our head because we were still little and we don't recollect the full picture of those flashes.
Of course, there is a memory I remember vividly even though I was still little but I couldn't forget such beautiful memory of my late dad.
I was just a little girl back then and I love my dad so much because we both look alike there is something I took from him that no one in my family has and the thing is my gap teeth.
Because of this, he loves me, especially among my siblings. Anytime he came home from a long trip because he was a traveler, I am the first person he asks.
One day, he told everyone to fast until noon because it was December. During that period, there is always fasting and prayer in the church for every family so he came back home from church that day and told my mom not to cook and that we all are fasting.
I and my siblings looked at each other faces as if he put a knife in our necks for telling my mom not to cook and then he said that anyone who didn't fast won't get Christmas cloth.
Nigerian parents and their condition so we all don't have a choice because we can't afford to wear Christmas cloth.
Around 10 am, my elder brother called me and my junior sister and we sat looking at the clock that we should come and we did, he took us outside under the staircase of our house and gave us sugarcane.
The three of us ate it and acted as if we are still fasting, I and my junior sister went back inside as if nothing happened meanwhile as an adult if you see something fishy about a child you could guess immediately.
My dad suspected us but he didn't leave where he was sitting, he called me to move closer which I did without thinking he could smell the sugarcane from my mouth and my hands.
He has already perceived the smell of sugarcane from my body so he played along with me and I sat on his leg and then he said, "who gave you?".
As a child, I didn't expect him to know what we did behind him so I denied that I didn't eat anything.
He called my brother and asked why he gave me sugarcane to eat when it is not yet time to break, where did he get the sugarcane from?
My brother lied that we didn't eat anything and then my dad narrated how my brother sneak into the parlor and took sugarcane from the fridge thinking that my dad was far asleep because he was snoring as if he was asleep.
It was that day I realized that no matter how much kids think they are smart, adults will surely know what that kid is up to and why he or she wants to act that way.
It was a very funny memory because we all thought that he will beat us and we won't get Christmas cloth, because during the festive season all that matters to kids is their cloth.
He got us our Christmas gift and warned us never to disobey his command in the house and we all made promises to him.
