Media was supposed to be a thing built to share what is happening in the world, and the news carried by media was supposed to be original and real.
But what do we have in media now, fake news all because people in charge want to make money at all costs without thinking of how the fake news would affect people who watch the news.
Last month, I was busy at work and my phone rang. I didn't want to pick it up but later I checked and it was my sister so I thought she might have an urgent thing to say.
So I picked and she began to panic. She told me there was a news spreading all over the media that "online banking is closing down, and that I should quickly transfer all my money away from there if I have anyone of it,".
I didn't think twice before I logged into my online bank account, but when I logged in I noticed nothing was happening and everything was working perfectly, but to be on the safer side I transferred my money to the main bank in case the news was right about the online bank.
In the process of transferring, I mistakenly transferred the money to my junior sister's account because we bear the same surname, and I didn't bother checking the last name before I input my pin.
Some hours later, I realized that I didn't get an alert so I checked the transfer history and that was when I knew I had sent the money to the wrong account, the good thing is it was my sister's and not a stranger's account.
I can't imagine how many people would make such mistakes while they were rushing to keep their money safe, that is what fake media news does.
Some days later, I saw another news that the main banks are the ones paying the Media to tarnish the reputation of the online banks so that all the customers that have switched to online banks could come back to them.
One thing about everything the media tells us is that out of %100, %50 is the only truth and has a real source. There are lot of news going on here in Nigeria and bank news is what is trending because no matter how little you earn, you definitely deal with banks and that is why the media always targets online banks even if it is to spread fake news.
Now to talk about news on the TV, sometimes I wonder where they get their information because they will never give the full details of what happened or what's happening.
For example, there was a time when youth gathered to protest against police brutality which ended in bloodshed in Nigeria, the media kept showing us that nothing was happening in the area where the protests were happening but a lot was happening.
I can remember vividly how I sat in front of the TV to watch the full news but I was disappointed that nothing was shown until I checked Twitter before I saw what happened that day.
So in one word, I don't trust media as a source for news because they are only showing what would benefit their stations and not what they want the world to see.
The only trusted source of news here in Nigeria is Twitter, Twitter doesn't post any news that is not real or has a real source and that is why people prefer to check Twitter for updates than listening to TV news. Despite all the fake news on TV that nobody died in the protests of END SARS, Twitter carried all the protests how everything started, and what led to the riots between the police and unharmed citizens that were killed, which wasn't shown in the media what really happened.
Here in Nigeria, some media sources of news are nothing to write home about because they don't do their findings before broadcasting and that is why they always fail to share full details of what was happening in the country.
