- Today I want to share with you my adventure visiting one of the most famous places in Portugal, which even holds several Guinness World Records, so let’s find out what makes this place so special and uncover all its secrets.

- El día de hoy quiero compartirles mi aventura visitando uno de los lugares más famosos en Portugal, que incluso tiene varios récords Guinness, así que vamos a descubrir qué es lo que hace tan especial este lugar y todos sus secretos.
🌊THE NAZARE LIGHTHOUSE.🌊
- This lighthouse is located in northern Portugal; it stands alongside a fort called São Miguel Arcanjo and has been a tourist attraction since 1978. As we can see in the photos, the fort is situated atop a cliff surrounded by large rocks and exposed to harsh weather conditions. It was built by the former king of Portugal between 1557 and 1578; this site served as a defensive position against potential threats from unwanted ships at the entrance to the town of Nazaré. The fort was strategically positioned to take advantage of the terrain, which was difficult to attack, and the strong winds, combined with powerful tides, ensured that the fort was well-protected. Another interesting fact about this place is that the first French invasion in 1807 reached this territory and caused several disasters and fires in the town, but in 1811 the Portuguese successfully reclaimed their territory, expelling the French. Today it is used for tourism, where people can watch the world’s largest waves; this fort serves as an excellent viewpoint.

- Este faro se encuentra localizado en Portugal, hacia el norte del país; el faro está acompañado de un fuerte llamado São Miguel Arcanjo, y ha sido una atracción turística desde 1978. Como podemos observar en las fotos, este fuerte se encuentra localizado en la cima de un acantilado rodeado de unas grandes rocas y un clima muy complicado. Fue construido por el antiguo rey de Portugal entre 1557 y 1578; este lugar era un lugar de defensa para posibles amenazas de navíos no deseados en la entrada del pueblo de Nazaré. Este fuerte fue colocado aprovechando la posición del terreno, que era complicado de atacar, y los fuertes vientos, junto con una marea tremenda, hacían que este fuerte estuviera bien protegido. Otro dato muy curioso de este lugar es que la primera invasión francesa en 1807 tocó este territorio y provocó varios desastres e incendios en el pueblo, pero en 1811 fue lograda con éxito la recuperación de los portugueses de su territorio, expulsando a los franceses. Y en la actualidad es utilizado para turismo, donde las personas pueden observar las olas más grandes del mundo; este fuerte sirve como un excelente mirador.
For a fee of 2 euros, you can visit the lighthouse and the museum dedicated to the surfers who have conquered the world’s biggest waves. Currently, the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed is held by German Sebastian Steudner, a man who rode a 26.21-meter wave on October 29, 2020, and to this day, no one has managed to dethrone him. No, my friend, I’m not pulling your leg; if you want to see waves the size of a building, this place delivers.
As I mentioned earlier, Portugal never ceases to amaze; the world’s biggest waves are found in Nazaré. In winter, the sea creates waves that inspire absolute terror, where surfers compete to test their skills and hope to break a new Guinness World Record. If you know anyone who surfs, they’ll undoubtedly know about this place, as it’s the dream of many.
Now for the big question: what is it about Nazaré that creates these waves straight out of a horror movie? To date, this place holds the record for the world’s largest wave, measuring 35 meters; however, it’s possible that this record could be broken in the future. Science tells us that what gives life to these waves is that Nazaré hides a small marine treasure; what creates these monstrosities is the Nazaré Canyon, a deep underwater trench 5 km deep and 230 km long, which acts like a funnel, concentrating and amplifying the energy of the North Atlantic waves, releasing it with great force near the coast, causing the waves to reach such heights.

Pagando un valor de 2 euros, podemos acceder al faro y al museo de los surfistas que han dominado las olas más grandes del mundo. En la actualidad, el récord Guinness de la ola más surfeada lo tiene el alemán Sebastian Steudner, un hombre que surfeó una ola de 26.21 m en el año 29-10-2020 y a día de hoy nadie ha logrado quitarle su trono. No, amigo, no te estoy engañando; si deseas observar olas con un tamaño de un edificio, este lugar lo ofrece.
Como te comenté anteriormente, Portugal no para de sorprender; las olas más grandes del mundo se encuentran en Nazaré. En invierno, el mar hace una creación de olas que provocan un terror absoluto, donde competencias de surfistas corren para probar su talento y con esperanza de batir un nuevo récord Guinness. Si conoces a alguien que hace surf, sin duda sabrá de este lugar, ya que es el sueño de muchos.
Ahora la gran pregunta, que es lo que hace Nazaré que crea estas olas de películas de miedo. A día de hoy, este lugar tiene el récord de la ola más grande del mundo, midiendo 35 metros; hasta el día de hoy, es posible que este récord pueda ser sobrepasado en el futuro. La ciencia dice que lo que le da vida a esas olas es que Nazaré esconde un pequeño tesoro marino; lo que crea esas monstruosidades es el Cañón de Nazaré, una profunda fosa submarina de 5 km de profundidad y 230 km de largo, que actúa como un embudo, concentra y amplifica la energía de las olas del Atlántico Norte, liberando con mucha energía cerca de la costa, provocando que las olas alcancen esas alturas.
- Near the lighthouse, you can explore the coastline, but depending on the season, you may only be able to walk close to it, as access is often restricted for safety reasons. When you come down from the lighthouse, there’s an arch on the beach; unfortunately, there was a “No Entry” sign in the area, so I could only take photos from above the arch. So now you know, if you want to learn more about history and science, you have to visit this place; for just €2, you can enjoy beautiful views, along with museums that explain the magic of Nazaré and the people who have braved its waves. I also want to mention that these high waves can almost always be seen from October through January, and you should check an app that tracks wave activity and sizes along with the times they occur. I visited this place in March, as winter was winding down, so I only saw normal waves, but I did experience the strong winds that make it impossible to walk, hahaha.

- Cerca del Faro puedes visitar la costa, pero dependiendo de la temporada puedes caminar cerca, ya que muchas veces por cuestiones de seguridad limitan el paso de las personas. Al bajar del faro, hay un arco en la playa; lastimosamente, en la zona había un aviso de prohibido la entrada, así que solo logré fotografiar desde arriba del arco. Así que ya sabes, si deseas adquirir nuevos conocimientos de historia y ciencia, tienes que visitar este lugar; por solo 2 €, puedes presenciar unas hermosas vistas, acompañado de museos que explican la magia de Nazaré y las personas que han desafiado sus olas. También quiero comentar que esas alturas casi siempre pueden ser observadas de octubre hasta enero y tienes que ir verificando una aplicación que envía registro de las olas y sus tamaños junto con la hora que aparece. Yo visité este lugar en marzo, ya en salida de invierno, así que solamente logré observar olas normales, pero los vientos fuertes que te impiden caminar sí lo presencié, hahaha.
