Coriander is one of the easiest plants/herbs to grow around our home or in our small garden as well. It grows spontaneously, doesn't require much care, needs small space, and we can enjoy some homegrown herbs anytime we want.
This year, I planted coriander for the first time ever and was pretty satisfied seeing the result. After harvesting them from one pot I again put the seeds on another because I couldn't resist but waiting to have some more homegrown & fresh coriander.
As this was the first time I had no idea the smell could be so refreshing, it gave my food some extra kick of flavors which I never get from the coriander that we bought from the market.
That's the magic of homesteading!
Let me share my step-by-step process and their development diary so you can also try this at home.
I got some coriander seeds from my sister in law, she planted some at home and suggested doing the same because of the flavor. And I agree because why not!
I have a small balcony garden, some spare soil, and pots. So yes!
If you want to nourish the soil first then you can but without putting anything extra I got fine result. As I said, it doesn't require much to grow coriander.
- Spread some seeds evenly over the soil. You can soak the seeds in water for 15 minutes before planting or put some extra water after planting.
- Cover the soil with another thin layer and water them.
After 3-4 days you will get to see small coriander plants.
- Don't miss watering them, they need wet soils to grow fast.
After 10 days.
- It usually takes 30-40 days to mature the plants. But you can enjoy them after even 10 days if you want.
After seeing the growth of my first pot I planted some more seeds on another pot.
This is the result after 5 days.
After probably 20 days!
I couldn't resist adding some to my cooking that day. Just look at the greens, they are so refreshing. Also, if you take the pot near your nose, you can smell the herbs, they were so good. I wonder how they grow so well without putting anything extra in the soil!
So I decided to harvest some.
Just cut the tops of the plant or you can uproot them as well. I used to first process and leave the roots for my sparrows which visit my balcony to get some food from my bird feeder!
And guess what, they enjoyed the lower part of the plants so well, they even tried to eat the plants that are growing on another pot that I have shared above.
A win-win situation here!
Just look at this!
So refreshing and full of flavors!
I'm so grateful that my sister-in-law gave me the idea and the seeds. Living in a city, this never came to my mind to grow this simple herb at home because I'm too used to buying this from the market. But growing some on my own made me feel so amazed, I know, this is going to be my every winter garden ritual from now on.
It's not about how much I produced because I only could add them in one single food item. But this is about growing some on my own, at my balcony, having some green around, being able to have the fresh taste of something homegrown. This reward is more than anything.
If you are fond of coriander or even if you are not but love seeing herbs, you can plant some at your home as well. Here people usually spread some seeds around their house and enjoy them after a few days. It's so simple, try it!
