If there is something that can symbolize hope for me that will be the Bantay Bell Tower. This Tower holds not just a mere perspective but also a historical place where reflection, hope, faith, history, and purpose are echoed powerfully. It hold stories of bravery, resilience, steadfastness, and sacrifice.
This iconic bell tower was built during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines specifically in 1591. It was built as having a purpose as a watchtower to guard against invading forces during war. It is located in Bantay, Ilocos Sur which is just minutes away from Vigan City.
If you focus on the architecture design of this tower, you will see red bricks blended with a Neo-Gothic and Romanesque architecture which all resonate with Spanish influence in the province of Ilocos Sur. For the knowledge of everyone, Vigan and the nearby places have potently preserved the influence of Spaniards like the culture, buildings, and such. That’s why if you plan to visit this place you will see old houses made from bricks, roads made from square rocks, which feels like you are walking in Spain, because Spain colonized the Philippines for over 333 years.
Furthermore, the exact place of the iconic tower was placed at the top of a gentle hill. So, if you go inside the tower, you will see how it overlooks the towns of Bantay and Vigan. This scenic view gives a breathtaking panoramic view which gives the photographers, travelers and those who are seeking for quiet moments or selah moments go back here over and over.
Beside this tower is the Saint Augustine Parish Church, also known as Bantay Church. Many people also come to this church because some believe that it has some sort of healing power, where illnesses were divinely healed.
This place is good to visit during sunset, because it beautifully covers the place. Actually, no words could explain how beautiful it was. Before I forget before you enter the tower there is a registration area where visitors need to register upon arrival. Locals may also ask you for voluntary donations – any amount will do– this will be used to preserve the place.
But sadly, due to the earthquake I don’t think they are allowing visitors to go inside the tower. Perhaps they are just permitting visitors to just roam around the tower and take some pictures.
Nevertheless, If you come by any chance here in Vigan City, don’t forget to visit this iconic Bell Tower to not miss any experience.
