Best Selling Albums Series: Backstreet Boys - Millennium

Millennium is the third studio album by American boy band Backstreet Boys. The album was released on May 18, 1999 by Jive Records. The album was produced by Max Martin, Kristian Lundin, Rami Yacoub, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Patrik "The Hitmaker" Lindqvist, Stephen Lipson, Mattias Gustafsson, Timmy Allen, Edwin "Tony" Nicholas and Eric Foster White. Millennium was the highly anticipated follow-up to the band's self-titled Backstreet's Back (1997). It was also their first album to be released in both the United States and internationally in the same form, at the same time.

Millennium was a major commercial success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling over 24 million copies worldwide. The album held the record for most shipments in one year, with 11 million sales in the United States in 1999. Additionally, it was nominated for five Grammy Awards. The Backstreet Boys had promoted Millennium through their Into the Millennium Tour, which became one of the fastest-grossing tours of all time.

Millennium debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 10 consecutive weeks. It also broke the previous Nielsen SoundScan record held by Garth Brooks for single-week record sales, by selling 1,134,000 copies in its first week of release. I would like to say that this record was subsequently broke in 2000 by NSYNC with the release of No Strings Attached. Additionally, Millennium broke a first-day sales record, selling nearly 500,000 copies in the US on its first day alone, and also became the best-selling album of 1999, selling 9,445,732 copies. The album has sold more than 13 million copies in the United States and has been certified 13 times platinum. It is the sixth best-selling album of the SoundScan era in the United States, with sales of 12.3 million units as of 2023.

Four singles were released from the album, these are:

"I Want It That Way" is the lead single from the album, which was released on April 12, 1999. "Larger than Life" is the second single, released on September 7, 1999. "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" was released as the third single on December 14, 1999. "The One" is the fourth and final single from the album and was released on May 1, 2000.

Backstreet Boys were one of the bands I heard most on television and radio in the 1999s and 2000s. They were a very popular band at that time. I can say that the song I heard most from the Millennium album is "I Want It That Way".
