The Behavioral and Cultural Insights Unit at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe will host a meeting dedicated to the role of the arts in healthcare, featuring a multi-country pilot study titled “Music and Motherhood”. The meeting is a collaboration with the Jameel Arts and Health Lab, supported by the Central Denmark Region. The Music and Motherhood meeting will be on October 6.
The event will feature music, live sketches, poetry and art breaks intertwined with panel sessions, presentations and collaborative group discussions, and will involve a deep dive into the potential for culture and the arts to support health systems and improve health and well-being. It will also feature arts practitioners, from musicians to visual artists, dancers, poets and hospital clowns. In particular, part of the program will focus on "Music and Motherhood". Music and Motherhood Meeting in 2022
WHO has conducted similar studies before, one of which was in 2022. The aim of this project was to investigate how Music and Motherhood, a clinically effective group singing intervention for new mothers in the UK, should be adapted to meet local needs, exploring the feasibility of implementation and its impact on mental health and wellbeing. This project involved two groups of 15 Romanian and Hungarian speaking mothers experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, and the two groups participated in weekly one-hour singing sessions for 10 weeks.
Results of the research in 2022:
Our research results suggest that the singing group intervention has significantly benefited the participating mothers. The scores for postnatal depression (measured on the EPDS – Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) decreased and and the scores indicating well-being (WHO-5 – Well-Being Index) and perceived social support (MSPSS –Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) have increased among the women in our pilot intervention. The changes in scores were large enough to meet statistical significance.
The project therefore is able to provide valuable insights for national and local public health bodies regarding how to implement arts and health interventions. It also contributes to current and future research and implementation efforts seeking to build on the clinical evidence base of singing for postnatal depression in different countries. It is already known that music has many benefits for the newborn and the mother, and many doctors even recommend pregnant women to listen to music.
The Effect of Music on Neonatal Stress, Mother's Breastfeeding Success and Comfort
Additionally, a study has shown that music plays an energizing, soothing, stimulating and arousing role for the newborn, and also has the potential to wake up a lethargic and withdrawn baby and calm a crying, restless baby. Additionally, research indicates that relaxing music in the early postpartum period supports breastfeeding behaviors of the mother and baby. For Source and More
I love seeing such research, events and meetings, especially I think it is important for WHO to support such projects because they have the chance to reach and help many people. Frankly, I support such projects without hesitation. Everyone has the right to use the power of Music and know the eo benefits of Music.
Question of the Day : Do you believe that music is beneficial to Mothers and Newborns? Please explain your answer briefly.
