Anyone who has spent any time in the shows I host on The Ramble will have heard me remind people that Steem is made up of investors, witnesses, developers, content creators and curators. We need them all and we all need to respect each other.
During the ongoing debate over HF21 there has been some less than respectful comments made about content creators. There is a tone to those disparaging remarks which is more how dare you speak up when the rewards you can receive will be reduced not for just one purpose but two.
Some have accused content creators of being selfish and entitled. That is an argument which is used when there is no actual rebuttle to a position. The same could be said of those who stand to gain out of the changes being made and are in a position to make those changes happen. Maybe it could be said even more… I don’t know. What I do know. Is that is a very condescending and hurtful accusation to toss out.
There have been other comments as well like 50/50 isn’t enough .. Should be 5/95 in favour of the curators. Or there’s ‘well content creators write a few words and hit publish, there’s no work there’. Some of these attitudes are coming from Witnesses and large stakeholders.
I can’t think of a platform or app on the internet which doesn’t use content. Too many people go immediately to content creators as ‘bloggers’. No, content creation takes many forms: written (blogging), audio (DSound), visual (DTube), photography, music, podcasts, even games have content. I saw lots of posts where game lore was being developed for Steem Monsters. It’s all content and someone needs to create it.
This post isn’t about the importance of content. Content creators should no more need to defend their role on this platform than anyone else. When putting any group in a position of defending their role on the platform and then heaping those attitudes on them, it has consequences.
On this platform, it means that people and projects decide to go away. It’s easy to dismiss their departure by saying they didn’t like the changes. The fact is not all departures are about not liking the changes.
Some of those departures are about being no longer willing to swallow the disrespect being tossed at their role on the platform. The lack of willingness to disagree without trying to dismantle others.
I’ll admit to have had some thoughts about doing so. Then decided that as much as the builders of the platform may have wanted this to be different here than the real world, when it comes to how people are treated, not much is different. I’ll adapt. I’ll ignore those who tossed out the disparaging comments. Some of them, I had a lot of respect for. They have lost that respect.
We’re losing a project I really loved watching develop. I believe given chance to see that project grow and flourish would see families and young people brought to this platform. Now it’s looking for a new home. Our friend has decided to take a personal stand and move it to another home along with the other great content and ideas she has so generously shared with this platform.
Attitudes have consequences people. Think about that.
