A Time To Shine
Today was an interesting day. I'd promised someone that I would ring the recruitment agency that hired me previously.
The very idea was enough to set my teeth chattering from anxiety. Was it a fear of rejection or something else?
Something to explore later, for sure.
One procrastination technique I have is to go somewhere and buy food. I have food in the freezer, but still, I was nervous.
I went to the Samnang Bakery as referenced in a previous post. I ordered a large roll and a drink went to sit down where I had been attacked by mosquitos, also referenced in that previous post. This time of day was mosquito free. They came out dusk, mostly. Mostly...
On my way to the outdoor seating area, I noticed that the nearby barber shop was closed and that it looked like someone had started renovating as there were holes in one of the walls and plaster and debris on the carpeted section of the floor.
Before long, the wife of the owner of the Pho Linh Vietnamese restaurant and one of her employees arrived. It didn't make sense because it was Monday and the restaurant was closed on Mondays.
She acknowledged me, smiling and waving, but that smile quickly vanished as she returned her attention to the phone held up her ear with her other hand.
She was clearly worried and was talking to her husband about what she should do next. Her employee escorted her around to the back entrance of the store. Apparently the back door was open.
I finished my meal and later saw her talking to the owners of the barber shop as I walked around the front of the shops on my way home.
Clearly someone had broken into the barber shop and destroyed the wall, setting off the alarm to the Vietnamese restaurant in the process. I'll probably find out more tomorrow.
I came home and replied to an email from my accountant. I'd asked her to do my taxes as the cut off for filing was only a few weeks away. I should have had it organised earlier, but it was one of those fear-based procrastination things.
Working at the Royal Adelaide Show solidly for a month pushed things back a bit, but I could have had it done in early July.
It took a while, in between bouts of pacing back and forth, and messing with the calculator on my phone but I managed to get the tax email sorted. There were a few errors but that should be sorted out tomorrow.
Then it was time to make the phone call mentioned earlier and that I was avoiding making all day.
I rang their Adelaide number, but their switchboard sent me to their Melbourne office without knowing. They transfer me to their temp team office, who then realise that I need to be speaking to someone in Adelaide. They claimed to be transferring me but just hung up.
So I ring the Adelaide office again and get someone local, finally.
I ask about work for the Adelaide 500 and she asked if I have an RSA or Responsible Service of Alcohol licence. I say I don't but that I am willing to get one, and asked of they had a preferred legit source for the RSA.
She said it didn't matter as long as they were accredited and that she'd email me a list of providers. Then she said she didn't have a list, but that I should get the licence as soon as possible.
I am not interested in serving alcohol, but the RSA is a requirement to be a bar runner, and I can't really knock back any work at this point.
She then said that she would pass me along to someone else who dealt with the ground staff, with a recommendation for cleaning work, which I had done before and that they would ring me tomorrow.
I won't hold my breath though. They are notrious for not ringing back unless they are desperate.
The stressful tasks out of the way, I went to local fish and chip shop for dinner, came home and relaxed.
Thank you for reading.
