Baby Assassins and Jerk Chicken
Due to a lack of mindfulness during the week, I double booked my Friday night!
Last night was also the monthly Critical Thinkers In The Pub meet up, an informal version of the Skeptics In The Pub meet ups in other states.
On my way to the pub was when I found the Samsung recharge cable mentioned in the last post.
The meetings are, as mentioned above, informal affairs with people largely catching up and talking about the goings on in the world and what we're doing with our lives.
One of my friends there is an Apple (as in the computer company) specialist and he always talks about cyber security or the latest technology.
Another friend works for the tax department, but he's reluctant to say anything that could be construed as "financial advice" but I have a way of gleaning things, and stuff about crypto is always important to know.
There's a good gender mix and it's good to hear from women about the things that affect them and their perspectives.
In general, I need to socialise a lot more with other humans.
The meeting started around 6pm but the movie started at 8pm. I had enough time to chat and make jokes, etc.
It meant ordering a meal earlier than normal, but I couldn't decide from the regular menu items.
Luckily they had a list of their specials for the day at the bar.
Jerk Chicken
After checking the specials, I decided on the Jerk Chicken.
It's not just a cool insult, but the name of a meal. A noun, not just a verb.
According to the menu, the Jerk Chicken is a spicy chicken breast marinated with mint, thyme and chilli sauce, served with steamed kipfler potatoes, salad leaves and chargrilled corn.
It was amazing.
My Apple specialist friend order the Duck Salad.
It looked and apparently tasted great. I might give it a try next time.
Soon, it was time for me to leave and at the end of a series of terrible duck related puns, I said "I have to fly south..." and left to the sound of uproarious laughter.
While outside I hear raised, excited voices. I turn and look back in time to see and photograph the Handlebar.
The voices were those of people encourging each other to cycle faster. It's a pedal powered portable pub!
Baby Assassins
The Adelaide Film Festival is in full swing, and in collaboration with the OzAsia Festival (I'd mistakenly referred to it as the "Korean Film Festival in my last post) there are several films made either here or in other Asian countries.
I was a little late, but entered the cinema to see the tail end of the intro presentation by my friend as I sat down. He didn't see me in the dark.
There was a short film before the main feature called The Secret Of Mt Trolla. It was a suspense filled horror that left me guessing and left it open to the audience to interpret what was going on. The acting was good however the special effects left a little to be desired. It ran for 12 minutes.
The feature film for the evening was Baby Assassins.
Before it started there was an little video presentation by the movie's director, which framed the movie nicely.
The movie itself is about these two teenage Japanese girls, who are hired assassins but also have to balance every day life. It's funny with great acting, special effects, martial arts, gun fights, all with modern cultural references. It also shows aspects of Japanese life that we normally don't get to see, and the wealth disparity of every day workers and the Yakuza.
I recommend it highly. There's a screening this Tuesday.
I know friends who are attempting to see every movie during the Adelaide Film Festival. I wish them luck as there's a lot on offer.
Until next time, thank you for reading.
