Betty's Burgers
In yesterday's post I mentioned that I had another spot at an open mic and how I stayed in the city afterwards.
This post will be about what I got up to.
My new good friend, Genevieve, had told me that she had to work at 1am Sunday morning and that she'd have to stop drinking at some point; she'd already been visibly tipsy by 4pm Saturday afternoon.
She doesn't do stand up comedy exactly, but she has been on stage once. She hangs around the comedy clubs and knows venue owners and bookers. Bookers are people who assign the spots for comedians and where they will be in the line up for the show.
She's not someone you want to upset, but she's also not an angry person either. More of an "eyes and ears" in the Sherlock Holmes sense; she recommends acts to bookers.
Bookers are the people assign spots to comedians during gigs. It doesn't matter how good a comedian thinks they are, without the booker, you don't get to go on stage.
Show business is a business after all.
After the other comedians went off to record a podcast video, Genevieve and I stayed behind and talked over a bowl of wedges about the days events. She said she'd definitely come and see me when I am on stage.
We left and on our way to the Cranker (a local nickname for the Crown and Anchor Hotel) to see who might be there, we walked past Betty's Burgers and decided to eat there later.
Fast forward to later and we were standing at the front entrance of Betty's Burgers, waiting several minutes for the disinterested teenaged waitresses to stop checking empty tables for empty plates and cups, and escort us and the line of people behind us to available seating.
The menu has a range of items, the main meals being as the name suggests, burgers. The other items included desserts like thick shakes, cheesecakes, icecreams (small take home tubs available), etc. and even beers and wines.
After scanning the menu, we both decided on a Betty's Deluxe burger each. The ingredients are Angus beef, pickles, bacon cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Betty's special sauce. She chose to omit the pickles, but I wasn't as fussy.
The burgers came half wrapped in paper, on a half box / tray thing with a few napkins. The burgers were great, if a little small for AU$15.50, but for being in the middle of the city, this is somewhat reasonable. On mine, the special sauce leaked out of the paper wrap and I think it needs a little re-think on their part, but I had no other complaints.
We ordered thickshakes as well, mine chocolate and hers a custom mix of vanilla and chocolate. They were pretty good.
For dessert we each chose the Lemon Raspberry Cheesecake.
The cheese cake contained vanilla custard, lemon curd, lemon zest, raspberries, New York cheesecake, and ginger crumble.
We both agreed that it was very good and then left satisfied and I escorted her to her bus stop and made sure she was on the bus before I made my way to the train station.
We nearly witnessed an accident as a car tried to race an oncoming bus. It made it unscathed, but only because the bus stopped in time. Pure craziness.
Anyway, if you're in the city of Adelaide, why not check out Betty's Burgers for yourself?
Thank you for reading.
