In the past, trade dollars were a dependable type of money for empires and countries trading in East Asia. A secure, interchangeable currency became necessary after the British after the Opium Wars opened Chinese ports. Several countries responded by issuing silver trade currencies. These design ideas were recently resurrected by The East India Company for use on contemporary silver coins, such as the 2021 Chinese Trade Dollar.
