Como habitante de este planeta, he tenido el privilegio de experimentar la transición del siglo XX al XXI, siendo testigo de muchos cambios en las costumbres, creencias y en los objetos de la sociedad. Este cambio ha sido tan vertiginoso, que muchas veces quedan en el olvido cosas y herramientas que fueron de mucha utilidad al momento de su creación, siendo posteriormente sustituidas por sus versiones mejoradas o por nuevos inventos que cumplían la misma función. Haciendo revisión de las cosas que decoran mi hogar, me puse a reflexionar sobre ese hecho, y también a pensar que las nuevas generaciones quizás nunca conozcan esos inventos que fueron lo máximo, lo más cool en un pasado no tan lejano. Es así que quise fotografiarles y darles una pequeñísima compilación de tales recuerdos, y esta es su primera parte.
As an inhabitant of this planet I have had the privilege of experiencing the transition from the 20th to the 21st century, witnessing many changes in customs, beliefs and objects in society. This change has been so rapid, that many times things and tools that were very useful at the time of its creation are forgotten, although later they were replaced by their improved versions or by new inventions that did the same function. Doing a review of the things that decorate my home, I began to reflect on that fact, and also to think that the new generations may never know those inventions that were the maximum, the most cool in the not so distant past. So I wanted to photograph them and give them a tiny compilation of such memories, and this is its first part.
El primer recuerdo que quiero mostrarles corresponde a los fabulosos diskettes, los cuales habían en tres tamaños: De 8", de 5¼" y de 3½". Era una verdadera tortura cuando se dañaban ya fuese por un virus o porque estaban cerca de una fuente magnética, o se doblaban, se astillaban o la unidad de disco no los leía. Los dos más grandes estuvieron vigentes en la década de 1980 y los más pequeños se utilizaron en la de 1990 y fueron reemplazados por los discos compactos. En la foto están los diskettes de 5¼" y de 3½".
The first memory that I want to show you corresponds to the fabulous floppy disks, which had three sizes: 8 ", 5¼" and 3½ ". It was a real torture when they were damaged and they were due to a virus or because were near a magnetic source, or it bent, chipped, or were not read by the disk drive; the two largest was practically in force in the 1980s and the smallest was used in the 1990s, when was replaced by compact discs. In the photo are the 5¼ "and 3½" floppy disks.
Disquetes // Diskettes
Siguiendo con los recuerdos de un pasado no tan lejano, les presento los teléfonos de disco, los cuales funcionaban con tecnología analógica y siempre estuvieron presentes en los hogares venezolanos desde 1930 hasta casi finalizado el siglo XX. En un principio se utilizaron aparatos con un diseño similar al del centro, el de color negro, como también había aquellos que se empotraban en la pared (no dispongo de esos ejemplares). En la década de 1970 en adelante se comenzaron a utilizar los equipos de color gris, (eran los que proveía la empresa de telefonía de mi país). Aproximadamente en la década de 1990 empezaron a ser sustituidos por teléfonos digitales. De los teléfonos que están en la fotografía, los de color gris aún están en buenas condiciones de funcionamiento, incluso tengo guardados los cajetines de conexión. Continuing with the memories of a not so distant past, I present disk phones, which worked with analog technology and were always present in Venezuelan homes from 1930 until almost the end of the 20th century. At first, devices with a design similar to the one in the center, the black color, were used, as well as those that were embedded in the wall (I do not have those specimens). In the 1970s onwards, the gray equipment began to be used (they were those provided by the telephone company in my country). Around the 1990s they began to be replaced by digital phones. Of the phones in the photo, the gray ones are still in good working condition; I even have the connection boxes stored. Teléfonos de disco // Disk Phones
Otro elemento que era fundamental en lo que a telefonía pública se refiere, lo constituían las tarjetas telefónicas, las que se comenzaron a utilizar en la década de 1990, para lo que se instalaron en mi país, teléfonos tarjeteros que fueron progresivamente sustituyendo a los teléfonos monederos. Lamentablemente no tengo estos equipos que eran geniales, especialmente los monederos, pero sí tengo muchas tarjetas (la colección es de mi hija), y aquí les muestro unos pocos ejemplares, incluso hay una que no ha sido abierta de su empaque original. Estas tarjetas que son de plástico duro, sustituyeron a unas de un material más endeble. Las que son similares a las de la foto, considero son verdaderas obras de arte, fueron emitidas durante largo tiempo por CANTV (la telefónica principal de Venezuela). Luego disminuyó la calidad de las tarjetas hasta llegar a tener aproximadamente un tercio de su tamaño original y eran elaboradas en cartón impreso, que son las que pueden ver en el segundo grupo de fotos.
Another element that was fundamental as far as public telephony is concerned, was telephone cards, which began to be used in the 1990s, for which purpose card telephones were gradually installed in my country, gradually replacing telephones purses. Unfortunately I do not have these kits that were great, especially the purses, but I do have a lot of cards (the collection is from my daughter), and here I show you a few copies, there is even one that has not been opened from its original packaging. These cards, which are made of hard plastic, replaced some cards of a weaker material. Those that are similar to those in the photo, I consider to be true works of art, were issued for a long time by CANTV (the main telephone company in Venezuela). Then the quality of the cards decreased until they reached approximately one third of their original size and they were made from printed cardboard, which are what you can see in the second group of photos.
