[Eng-Esp] Images of a Caracas neighborhood: Antímano / Imágenes de un barrio caraqueño: Antímano

Some time ago I worked for a series of publications that told the story of some of the best-known barrios (neighborhoods) in Caracas, Venezuela, and to do some interviews and photos I went one day to Antímano, an area located in the west of the city.

Hace tiempo trabajé para una serie de publicaciones que contaban la historia de algunos de los barrios más conocidos de Caracas, Venezuela, y para hacer algunas entrevistas y fotos fui un día para Antímano, zona ubicada en el oeste de la ciudad.

The idea of these publications was for the inhabitants themselves, the founders of these neighborhoods, to tell how they settled in these places and why, and how their environment changed over the years.

La idea de estas publicaciones era que los propios habitantes, los fundadores de estos barrios, contaran cómo se establecieron en estos lugares y por qué, y cómo su entorno fue cambiando con el paso de los años.

The Caracas neighborhoods were largely formed by the peasant exodus that occurred in the mid-twentieth century, at that time thousands of people came to the Venezuelan capital to work and built their homes improvisedly in areas that didn't have any basic services.

Los barrios caraqueños se formaron en gran parte por el éxodo campesino ocurrido a mediados del siglo XX, en esa época miles de personas llegaron a la capital venezolana para trabajar y fueron construyendo sus viviendas improvisadamente en zonas que no contaban con ningún servicio básico.

In the case of Antímano, its history is much older, since there are documents that mark its foundation on May 8, 1621, when it was established as an agricultural production area.

En el caso de Antímano su historia es mucho más antigua, ya que hay documentos que registran su fundación el 8 de mayo de 1621, época en la que se estableció como una zona de producción agrícola.

As for its name, it comes from an acronym (initials or more letters of other words) of the terms Atamanona and Amatima, which were the names of the two indigenous groups that inhabited this place in pre-Columbian times and who faced the constant theft of their territories, among other abuses that continued throughout the seventeenth century.

En cuanto a su nombre, proviene de un acrónimo (iniciales o más letras de otras palabras) de los términos Atamanona y Amatima, que eran los nombres de los dos grupos indígenas que habitaban este lugar en la época precolombina y que enfrentaron el constante robo de sus territorios, entre otros abusos que continuaron durante todo el siglo XVII.

Already into the twentieth century, in the fifties industrial growth began with the installation of companies such as the iron and steel industry, textiles, electrical appliances, automotive, furniture, among others, and thus all agricultural traces in Antímano gradually ended and its population increased considerably without planning by the state. Currently, about 160,000 people live here.

Ya entrado el siglo XX, en los años cincuenta comenzó el crecimiento industrial con la instalación de empresas como la siderúrgica, textiles, electrodomésticos, automotriz, mobiliarios, entre otras y así fue terminando poco a poco todo vestigio agrícola en Antímano y su población aumentó considerablemente sin planificación por parte del Estado. Actualmente habitan acá unas 160.000 personas.

So I invite you to a walk in images through this Caracas neighborhood, which was built mostly by the inhabitants themselves, who over the years struggled to have basic services in their homes such as: water, electricity, gas, etc. Many problems, such as the crime rate, still persist, but people try every day to improve their situation.

Los invito entonces a un paseo en imágenes por este barrio caraqueño, el cual fue construido en su mayoría por los propios habitantes, quienes a lo largo de los años lucharon para poder conseguir tener los servicios básicos en sus casas como: agua, electricidad, gas, etc. Muchos problemas, como el del índice delictivo, aún persisten, pero la gente trata día a día de mejorar su situación.

Sometimes it is difficult to find your way here because most of the streets and alleys are not identified, fortunately I went through the neighborhood with people from the community / Es difícil orientarse a veces aquí porque la mayoría de las calles y callejones no están identificados, afortunadamente yo recorrí el barrio con personas de la comunidad

The neighbors told me that due to an earthquake years ago, this wall was the only thing that remained of the church that was here / Me contaron los vecinos que debido a un terremoto hace años, esta pared fue lo único que quedó de la iglesia que había aquí

Antímano is located in a mountain area, so some panoramic views can be seen from there / Antímano está situada en zona de montaña, por lo que se pueden ver desde allí algunas panorámicas

Most of the houses have those blue tanks on their roofs, in which they store water since many, for different reasons, do not always get the vital liquid through pipes / La mayoría de las casas tienen en sus techos esos tanques azules, en los cuales almacenan agua ya que a muchos, por distintas causas, no les llega siempre el vital líquido por tubería

The green roofed house on the right is a public health module that provides primary care / La casita de techo verde que se ve a la derecha es un módulo público de salud que brinda atención primaria

In many areas of Antímano public transport is a problem because it does not easily reach the highest parts / En muchas zonas de Antímano el transporte público es un problema porque no llega a fácilmente a las partes más altas

I can never resist taking pictures of a cat / Jamás me resisto a tomarle fotos a un gato

The motorcycle is one of the most popular vehicles in the neighborhood / La moto es uno de los vehículos más populares en el barrio

Although many houses are seen without frisation, there are others that are in better condition / Aunque se ven muchas casas sin frisar, hay otras que están en mejores condiciones
