Exploring Boljoon, a charming town of Cebu made me feel as though I was on a journey back in time. The bustle of the people instantly calmed amidst the mountains and the lovely shore, allowing me to pay a visit to the Patrocinio de Maria Church, which is regarded as an important historical site. It seemed to me that the whole area was infused with history and peace from the moment I entered.
First Impressions
Approaching the Church building, I remember imagining what it looked like with its sturdy stone fortress and vibrant red roofs. Seeing how strongly it was built in the eighteen century prompted a great deal of respect for the people that built it. The church grounds were immaculately kept and serene, with large trees and benches for willing participants. The sounds from chirping birds and the wind rustling through the trees further enhanced the tranquil atmosphere. I gently pushed open the doors of the chapel because they were slightly ajar, inviting me in.
Inside the Church
The moment I walked through the doors, it felt as though I was rudely whisked away into another dimension. The atmosphere was chilly with a hint of wood incense in the backdrop, and my gaze couldn’t move away from the large altar that was beautifully carved up and embellished in gold. There was also a painting above the altar of our holy mother which was surrounded by a serene tableau, giving an incomprehensible sense of solace.
Looking at the verge of the immaculately designed dome, it could be seen that it too was beautifully painted adding the features of softness to both the color and the storytelling art that embellished it. Every single detail entranced me and before I noticed, my eyes were already glued to the seats that had been elegantly worn down by the endless prayers of the devoted souls before me.
The Watchtowers
As I traversed around the church’s premises, I caught a sight of two towering structures. Intrigued by what they were, I inquired one of the locals about them who told me, “One of the watchtowers keeps a lookout for the sea while the other high raised one is meant for spotting oncoming Moro invasions.” From their descriptions, it was apparent how vital the turriformed structures were in the towns history, serving as a testament to Boljoon’s perseverance and alertness to fight through trying times.
Exploring the Churchyard
Following my excursion inside, I made up my mind to go around the vicinity of the church and noticed that the churchyard was equally beautiful. The belfry adjacent to the church was my major attraction. Its stone structure complemented the distinctive look of the church and I could imagine the sound of its bells that would be used to summon the faithful to prayer.
I saw the leftover parts of an old convent that was also situated in the vicinity. Though some of the convent structure was damaged, it gave me a view of how the life might have looked to the priests who stayed there. The flowers surrounding the church were an eyesore, the beautiful kind. There were benches under the trees which were best to sit and breathe the fresh air.
My Reflection
It was not a mere trip to the Church of Nuestra Senora De Patrocinio, it was an event that made emotion surging deep within me. In the quietness and beauty of the church, I was reminded how important history and faith are in our life. Boljoon was an undiscovered treasure for me and I felt that there was a stillness in life which allowed one to enjoy the uncomplicated moments.
As I exited the church, I was thankful to have witnessed such a marvelous historical structure. In case you ever find yourself in Cebu, make it a point to check this stunning church. It is more than just a type of religious service, it is a prayer house, faith, and more importantly culture.
