A joule (symbol: J) is the unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI). It is named after James Prescott Joule, an English physicist who first demonstrated the relationship between mechanical work and heat transfer.

One joule is defined as the energy expended when a force of one newton (N) is applied over a distance of one meter (m).
