We had been longing for the rain since January this year. As farmers in our area were desperately in need of water for their fields, the dark clouds that were gathering yesterday's Sunday evening initially brought hope and joy. We were all inside, watching as the sky kept darkening, a clear sign that there would be heavy rain.
It started sooner than anyone expected. The wind came first, after the sky filled up, with people running for shelter. Everyone hurried to close their doors and windows, trying to prevent the coming rain from entering their homes. None of us could have imagined what was forming.
The rains were heralded by a thunderous warning. The storm that followed was one we had never witnessed before. Overhead tanks were torn from their fittings and flung about like toys. Electric poles, usually so strong and reliable, gave way to the force of the storm.
Inside our house, things were increasingly frightening. The roof made terrible rattling sounds, like it was going to tear off at any moment. The fury of the tempest was able to force our bathroom window open, and soon water was gushing in. If it were not for our sunken bathtub trapping and leading the water into the septic tank, the water would have been much deeper.
The night was terrible, but the daylight came with the complete scene of destruction. When we came to open our shop for the day's business, we were met with a pitiful sight. The roof of our shop was completely torn off, portions of the walls had fallen down, and all the contents were ruined by the rain.
We were not the only unlucky ones. The streets were littered with roofing materials strewn all over, and some other buildings also suffered the same destiny. It was made even more of a tragedy when the local news reported that there were individuals who died when buildings collapsed as the storm came through.
It pains me to write this. The sheer scale of destruction makes me ask myself how we will ever bounce back from losses such as this. Our store requires immediate restoration prior to reopening for business, yet the road towards recuperation looms as an insurmountable challenge.
This storm has left an indelible mark on our society. While we're grateful to be alive, the work of rebuilding confronts us. Sometimes nature's fury reminds us how life can change in an instant, and we're left to pick up the pieces and find strength we never knew we had.
I humbly need your help now more than ever. Together, we can build a better world.
