Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health
It's no longer news that adolescents of this generation are deeply engrossed in social media, and no one is to be blamed because it's the norm of life. Technology and social media are some of the ruling factors in today's world. This age group is not restricted from using phones in schools, and while this helps them grow in certain aspects, it also affects them negatively.
To many people out there who have adopted social media as a lifestyle, we can all agree that it's a major driving force behind our mental health. It plays a significant role in shaping our thoughts, as we spend a lot of time interacting there. The same applies to the younger ones, and even more intensely, because adolescence is a crucial stage for growth in all ramifications, where the brain easily picks things up and gets influenced.
From the look of things, I believe social media on adolescents is more of a disadvantage, especially when they become overly consumed by social media. It takes a toll on their thinking, and these days, all sorts of content are seen on social platforms. It has gotten worse with the rise of rampant TikTok challenges. For many of them, all that's on their mind is how to make their entries outstanding just to get a large number of views. I have younger siblings who are in their adolescent age, and I have seen how deeply involved they are with social media, always making one video or the other, even during important occasions. My dad usually gets mad at them for this. I’m very sure the same thing happens while they’re in school receiving lectures; their minds are completely occupied with social media.
As much as they are becoming socially active and technologically brilliant, which is a good thing, the part where they are completely consumed by it(social media)and overlook real life is the downside. For most young people in this age group, the internet has become their dwelling place, and anything happening in the real world is of little concern to them. Moreover, whenever their data subscription gets exhausted and they struggle to find money to renew it, they feel deeply sad and hurt. That's a very bad situation.
Thanks!
