I started playing Street Fighter with the first arcade game, I was not excited with it to be honest. I then discovered the sequel in a bowling alley in a backwoods town here in Arkansas and fell in love with it. I even grabbed the first Super Nintendo release and that was good enough for me – I skipped the updates on SNES. I also played most of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games (arcade, 8 and 16-Bit) and was a big fan as they were mostly brawlers (my favorite genre). Now we are getting a crossover between the two franchises. This is fitting as TMNT have at least one 1 on 1 fighting game to their credit (for better or for worse).
What took so long?
As mentioned already, the TMNT group had a fighting game before – on SNES, Genesis, and NES. It was alright, nothing to shake Street Fighter from its perch. The point is, it showed the heroes in a half shell could do this type of game. Previously, they had an action game then a series of brawlers.
Street Fighter, as far as I know, has never ventured out of the 1 on 1 fighting game genre. So that makes sense for TMNT to come battle on their turf.
Considering the popularity of both franchises, I am surprised it took this long to get a crossover.
Crack some shells, Street Fighter style
The TMNT franchise are not just adding a few extra characters here. In the Battle Hub you will see TMNT banners, signs, trailers, and more. This would be like a partial game takeover of sorts.
The trailer above does a decent job relaying the extras the TMNT franchise is bringing to Street Fighter 6. Unfortunately, that trailer is light on actual fighting footage showing the turtles in action.
