I'm taking you along with me as I create a new card deck for myself. I will create it with an American Indian theme as I did once before. What is Lenormand? - check out my previous article.
Card 25 - UNITY
This was another card that caused me a great deal of difficulty. The original card is the Ring with its meaning involving commitment - particularly that of marriage or a very strong partnership.
When we think of the RING, we think of:
- commitment, marriage or partnership
- promises and cooperation
- harmony, romance and deep friendship
- unconditional love, trust and loyalty

Of course, as with many European traditions, this one doesn't translate so well with more traditional tribal traditions.
Even once I found some of the different object that the tribes used for weddings, it was difficult to find a picture that had the Creative Commons licensing I needed. I also had to name my new card, and simply naming it after one of the many objects which I looked at didn't seem right... so, in the end, I decided to call it Unity - being the real goal of a marriage or major partnership. (A merger of companies would suit this card equally.)
I finally found a CC2-licensed photo of a wedding basket - as used by the Navajo/Diné and Hopi peoples. The idea is that the actual pattern of the basket shows the couple their road map to a successful wedded life together. To me, that really does embody the meaning of the Ring, so is perfectly appropriate for this card.
The second image was one of a pair of wolves to complement the whole idea behind the wedding basket.
Finally, I still required a playing card.
Here is my result when I put everything together.
