Perhaps the most famous cathedral in the world stands in the 4th arrondissement of Paris on an island in the middle of the Seine: Notre-Dame de Paris. As we all know, it was severely damaged by a fire in 2019 and is currently undergoing a massive restoration effort. We can only hope that this beautiful historic building will not be spoiled with "modern" ideas in the process.
We shall see: The work should be completed in time for the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Maybe by then we will once again be able to move freely about Paris without COVID restrictions. Hope springs eternal! In the meantime, I have painted a corresponding scene. Creating a depiction of Notre-Dame is practically compulsory for every painter. O.K. - check...
Die vielleicht bekannteste Kathedrale der Welt steht im 4. Arrondissement von Paris auf einer Insel inmitten der Seine: Notre-Dame de Paris. Wie wir alle wissen, wurde sie 2019 durch ein Feuer schwer beschädigt und wird derzeit mit massivem Aufwand restauriert. Wir können nur hoffen, dass dieses wunderschöne historische Gebäude dabei nicht mit "modernen" Ideen verschandelt wird.
Wir werden sehen: Pünktlich zur Eröffnung der Sommer-Olympiade 2024 in Paris sollen die Arbeiten abgeschlossen sein. Vielleicht kann man sich bis dahin auch wieder ohne Corona-Einschränkungen in Paris frei bewegen. Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt! In der Zwischenzeit habe ich schon einmal eine entsprechende Szene gemalt. Die Darstellung von Notre-Dame gehört ja praktisch zum Pflichtprogramm der Malerei. Okay, Häkchen dran...

Creative Process:
For this painting I used the money-saving gesso technique described in detail in this post. The painting was inspired by this photo on Pixabay.
Für dieses Bild habe ich die Geld sparende Gesso-Technik angewandt, die ich in diesem Post detailliert beschrieben habe. Die Arbeit wurde von diesem Foto auf Pixabay inspiriert.
The image is sketched in pencil and excess graphite is removed with a kneaded eraser.
Das Bild wird mit Bleistift skizziert und überschüssiges Graphit mit Knetgummi entfernt.
A warm tone underpainting for the pastel work is done in watercolor.
Eine warmtönige Untermalung für die Pastelle wird in Aquarell angelegt.
The sky is painted in watercolors and will remain unchanged.
Der Himmel wird in Aquarell gemalt und danach nicht mehr verändert.
The shadow side of the river is underpainted in cooler watercolors.
Die Schattenseite des Flusses wird in kühlerem Aquarell untermalt.
The reflections on the water are a combination of watercolor and pastel.
Die Reflexionen auf dem Wasser sind eine Kombination von Aquarell und Pastell.
The underpainting is fixed and gessoed. From now on I'll continue only with pastels.
Die Untermalung wird fixiert und gessoiert. Ab jetzt male ich nur in Pastell weiter.
Pastel allows for detail control and texture not easily achievable in watercolor.
Pastell ermöglicht Detailkontrolle und Texturen, die im Aquarell nicht so einfach wären.
