It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community. And it's not just any Three Tune Tuesday today; it's the first Three Tune Tuesday of 2023!
I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.
Most of the songs that I choose to share have some form of inspiration behind them. This week's TTT is no different. Today we're closing out the Christmas season, bringing in the New Year, and starting with a first for the first TTT of 2023.
We are still within the Christmastide season, though it is drawing to a close. Twelfth night is tomorrow night which, in my mind, brings Christmas to an end. Being that we are still within the season, however, I find it fitting to begin this TTT with my final Christmas song.
Now that I've closed out Christmas it's time to move on, but not before looking back to appreciate what we have, and what we have had. Auld Lang Syne is a song about remembering our friends and family, and not marching forward without remembering where we've come from.
One of the interesting "facts" of Auld Lang Syne is that I do not believe anyone - anywhere - actually knows the words to the song, but just makes them up as it is sung.
Now, finally, the jewel of this weeks trio of songs. I obtained this record several months ago and immediately knew I would need to save it for this particular TTT. This particular record in my possession - literally and physically - is beat up, dirty, scratched, and even has a small tear in it, but it is still the first ever jazz record ever produced.
Yes, Livery Stable Blues by the Original Dixieland 'Jass' Band is regarded as the first ever recording of a jazz song. This was early enough that "jazz" will still spelled as "jass." I feel that sharing this "first" is a great way to meet the first TTT of the year.

I run a live stream of my TTT songs every Tuesday at 12:00pm EDT, then take that stream and share the songs from it here, on Hive, on Wednesday (or occasionally Thursday). These songs are all old pre-1923 78rpm records from my collection, played on my antique phonographs and recorded with a well placed microphone. Like what you hear? Come listen live!
