Hello everyone! First of all, I would like to wish all Muslims Selamat Hari Raya and Eid Mubarak. I hope that you had a great day. It is quite a simple year this time, sort of like last year as there is Movement Control Order in Malaysia which means we are prohibited from crossing the state borders unless we have a good reason to do so and an official letter or permission for support.
Lemang is a traditional delicacy that is a part of the Hari Raya celebration. It is glutinous rice cooked with pandan and coconut milk inside a hollowed bamboo. Since I am unable chose to minimize meeting other people, I did not attend any open houses and neither did I buy lemang this year. So, I did not get a taste of it unfortunately. But I thought why not draw lemang today.
Tools and Materials
- Staedler Luna colour pencils
- A HB pencil to draw
- A sketchbook
Method
This is my drawing of lemang. I did it using a HB pencil.
I started with the easiest part. I used multiple green shades and yellow as well for this lemang, which is still in a hollowed bamboo.
I started colouring the second lemang on the edges first. I used the same shades of green and yellow. I left the middle part white for highlights.
I finished colouring the second lemang as well. I did some stripe-like pattern to create the burned bamboo texture that we see on cooked lemang.
Next, I coloured the lemang that were cut and arranged on the platter. Again, I used the same colours that I used in both of the previous lemang.
Then, I moved onto the woven basket. I coloured it with a single golden brown in an almost flat texture.
I then added other shades of brown to give the woven basket more texture. I hope I managed to get close to the woven pattern.
I proceeded to colour the banana leaf on which the lemang are placed on.
I finished colouring the banana leaf. I used a few warm shades of green so they can be distinguished from the lemang and also have some shadows and highlights at the same time.
It was finally time to colour the part I was avoiding. I didn't know how to colour the glutinous rice as it is white. I just coloured it in white, then added a few soft details with other colours such as grey, blue, green and yellow.
This is my artwork with all the colours that I used. i signed it as well :D
The colours here look a little different because I held my sketchbook near my window and snapped a picture under natural light. It looked better than the other pictures.

My Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslims once again. Thank you for dropping by and have a great day ahead =)
