This summer I visited Astoria, Oregon and also ventured over to Fort Stevens to visit the wreckage of the Peter Iredale. I took the photo above with my I-phone 6s on a very calm, sunny day.

The ship wrecked on the beach of Fort Stevens on October 25, 1906 en route to Portland, Oregon from Mexico. In order to reach Portland, ships must risk crossing one of the worlds most dangerous river bars, The Columbia River Bar. It’s no wonder that this area is called Cape Disappointment, or the Graveyard of the Northwest. The ship was never saved, and remains today as a popular tourist attraction along the Oregon Coast.
So the next time you are visiting along the Oregon Coast, take the opportunity to visit Fort Stevens and the Peter Iredale. Thank you, and Happy New Year!
