In our very young days, we longed for a time when we could become "independent." What kid has not thought about running away from home? Which high school senior didn't count the days until the move to a college campus?
RECOGNIZING THE VALUE OF INTERDEPENDENCE
Later on, we realize that having close family connections--and seeing each other as frequently as we can, even when we have to travel great distances--enriches our lives.
Independence becomes less desirable, interdependence more essential.
ABOUT MY FAMILY
In the photo, my sister Jane stands between my wife Sandra and me. Bet you can sense the warm relationships the three of us have kept strong across decades.
One of my sisters left this earth in February. More recently, we attended Jane's husband's funeral last week. Even so, we do not feel that our kinship or love went with them.
OUR NEXT GENERATION
Sandra and I enjoy our two lovely adult daughters, too, Shelley and Suzanne.
We love their children, too.
DURABLE FAMILIES REQUIRE EFFORT
Sure, family life isn't a cinch. Perfect families exist only on TV or in fiction. In real life we need:
patience
forgiveness
tolerance
humor
support
respect
and so much more.
Yet the effort brings permanent rewards.
Sustaining our family ties will enrich our lives as long as we live--and the lives of others when our earthly time ends.
