everything you use online you're basically selling yourself. There is no such thing as a 'free service'. Every free service you've ever used you're selling your data / ad/ metrics/ personal data for the thing you're using. You can get around that by paying to some services that are proponent of privacy rights and will in theory not collect data about you.
At the end of the day almost everything online is a compromise of features and benefits vs cost to personal data and seeing if it's worth it to you.
ie. I wouldn't use anything except gmail these days. I'm fine with the fact that i get targeted ads for the use of the best email app i've ever used. Sure I can use mutt / thunderbird.. but I don't want to. So I'm good with the bargain.
I think the most important point is realizing you fully understand what your paying for those services and if you trully are okay with it.
ie. FB you're giving FB full rights and permissions to all data you upload. If you're okay with that in order to share photos with friends/family...then go for it. Otherwise.. maybe don't use it.
