Google is getting creepier. And surprisingly, it's putting you in charge.
I'm sure you must have seen a new popup as you are about to login to your Gmail or any other Google app. Something like this:
So here is the new deal:
We all know Google has been gathering information on how you use its apps and services. Creepy right? Funny how it once had "Don't be Evil" has its motto. The data got by tracking you are stored separately in each app silo.
Now, Google has bumped its creepy level to new heights.
It has recently developed the infrastructure to gather all data from across the web - its independent apps and services (Maps,YouTube, Gmail etc) into a central platform. And from all your devices - Desktop, Android and iOS too.
Which translates to more specific data for Advertisers. Which means more money for the Big G.
And sadly, nothing for you. (Here is one of the reasons we love Steemit).
However, there is GOOD NEWS.
Thanks to pressure from privacy activists and criticisms from rival companies like Apple; Google is giving you the chance to opt in - (invite a creepy stranger) or opt out.
By the way, if you're still less concerned about your privacy. You've got to check this video post :
"I Don't Have Anything To Hide" . How A Video Changed My View On Privacy
Ooh. And don’t forget to install an Adblock browser extension or use a VPN.
Free Gift:
With its new super-creepy powers, Google is trying to pacify privacy activists with a new website called My activity (https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity).
This dashboard displays all data got from tracking you. Your search terms, videos you watch, location searches, ads you click etc including the date and time. Creepy?
You also have the ability to delete an entry from your dashboard.
A Nifty Productivity Tool
Ever wondered how many hours you spend searching for stuffs and watching YouTube videos. The My Activity Dashboard gives you the ability to see how many hours you spend on Google Apps and services. Although there are several web apps that you can use to track your online productivity, Google's uhm gift is more robust and creepier.
