The Amnesic Incognito Live System (TAILS) is an OS built entirely around the idea of sending and receiving all the Internet traffic through the Tor network. You could simply use it through a USB drive or just use a DVD or SD card. USB is the commonly taken option. TAILS is a Debian-based Linux distribution and what got my attention was that Edward Snowden was using it. The OS is designed to leave no digital footprint on the machine unless explicitly told to do so. Basically you can boot your device from the USB and after you are done it'd be as if you never used he device and did whatever you did.
Major Extra Benefit - Malware Defense
Since the OS is designed to leave no trace, the malware would reside on your RAM but after you are done with your work, it'll all be gone along with your traces. I'm no security expert. So I don'know if there is any way for a malware to be written specifically targeting TAILS. But it's obvious that this is a huge security advantage.
Nobody Knows Who Wrote It
Think about Satoshi Nakamoto from Bitcoin or JL777 from Komodo. As for TAILS there isn't even a pseudonym like that. In Snowden's leaks it was found that NSA was really complaining about the use of TAILS and it at least led Snowden to grow more confident regarding the OS. There is still a group that is doing the very hard and very important development work.
That's Where You Can Help With Your Donations
If it had to be payed for, the distribution of the OS would be very low and not a lot of people would benefit from it. Being free and open source gets certain incentives out that could get some malicious individuals into the development of the project. But at the same time the project is vulnerable to the laws of economics. So your donations can help a lot here.
Unfortunately they only accept Bitcoin and traditional methods.

TAILS 3.9.1 Was Out on October 3rd
You are still not getting anything flashy. But it's private and secure and comes up with some basic tools to make you wonder if you are still in the 90s or something. TAILS will not become an alternative OS. It's a specialized OS just as how STEEM is specialized for social media.
In 2014 some zero day vulnerabilities in TAILS were discovered. This was before the version 1.1 Here is the Forbes article.
