Righteousness ("Do not do to anyone what you yourself hate" Tobit 4:15) is a beautiful spiritual gift that leads us not only to the sensible life but also to the knowledge of Gnosis (spiritual enlightenment) and immortality. The sapiential books like Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Ben Sira, and Wisdom teach us a lot about this spiritual gift, because righteousness is closely linked to the study of the sciences of wisdom and ethics.
Righteousness is the definition of the good, in other words, righteousness is an ethical virtue, and about righteousness, the Bible gives us an interesting proverb: "In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality" Proverbs 12:28.
With this, the Book of Proverbs teaches us that whoever lives righteously loves life, that is, promotes it, increases it, and improves it. Righteousness is progressive, expansive, and benevolent, that is why the Bible also explains with wisdom: "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day" Proverbs 4:18.
Righteousness is a bright and shining path, the Book of Proverbs teaches to the readers metaphorically. And this is the reason of why righteousness brings with it some small gifts, and these are happiness and joy. All human beings desire happiness and joy, the philosophers and the masters of wisdom teach us, and rectitude is the most direct path to achieve these gifts, righteous living minimizes suffering.
And the Book of Proverbs tells us something else, righteousness leads not only to the true life but also to immortality. Immortality was in the ancient world one of the most important and mysterious gifts, and in many philosophies, it is the most important blessing to achieve. In simple terms, immortality is understood as longevity in the Bible. And longevity is intimately linked to inner peace, patience, equanimity, and the control of emotions.
Righteousness as a gift or virtue blesses man in every way.
