Narcissism is said to be on the rise in society today, with mostly younger people and men reportedly being the most vulnerable to be affected.
We're living in the age of entitlement according to some researchers, they say we're dealing with a narcissism epidemic.
This is a problem for which many have pointed their finger at social media to blame, suggesting that it's the tool that has played a critical role in fueling narcissistic tendencies for so many.
Are You A Narcissist?
This is one question, researchers from Ohio State have suggested, might be the most helpful in identifying potential narcissists, believe it or not.
When participants had been asked whether or not they agreed with the statement suggesting that they were a narcissist, researchers found that the question had been rather telling in affording answers that could help to potentially accurately identify narcissistic people.
There are other tools that can be used, such as the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), but researchers found some surprising results when using just this one simple question with study participants.
Why might this question help to give away the narcissists?
The researchers suggest that for those people who are willing to admit that they are more narcissistic, it's likely going to be an accurate response that they truly are.
There is no problem with admitting that they might be narcissistic, because along with seeing themselves as being superior to others, they also likely won't see narcissism as something that's a negative quality.
Previous research has also suggested that grandiose narcissism is related to more time spent online, frequent status updates and posting pictures, and to a social media users' number of followers.
What might we do to try and combat the rise in narcissism? Empathy might be the much needed antidote.
