Yesterday I came across a post by on refusing to click on website articles until these "journalists" start writing with integrity. The post kind of opened me up to sharing some of my few million++ thoughts going on my mind. None of these are solutions to make things better. They are a little bit like going the way of Francisco d'Anconia in some aspects. But before that, let's take a look at Advertisement Industry.
One of the Most Inefficient Businesses
Note that I said "Inefficient" instead of something like ineffective. Ads are very effective. Marketing does produce positive results and they are very important to a business. But ads are also a terrible way to go if you want to get obsessed on bang per buck.
A vast majority of the internet economy is based around ads. If you are using something for free, 99.999% of the time it is based around some form of advertisements. Since ads are a huge part of the internet economy and since ads are not very efficient, there comes a certain kind of consequence.
Large companies are the one paying the biggest amounts in ad money and therefor they can influence the content of the internet platforms and impose their good or bad (mostly just bad) political views through these platforms. Adpocalypse is the biggest and most prominent example I that is easy to investigate.
Dealing Waste To Those Who Spend On Ads
It's easy to see the faults of various websites going to some terrible polices and/or using click baiting and other forms of Yellow Journalism and these guys do deserve the backlash they get. But what about those who are much more behind the scenes. What about those PC - SJW commercials? what about the entities that set up the incentives for Yellow Journalism to thrive? How about wasting their money?
How Many Times Have You Seen Annoying Ads Even On Content You Enjoy?
What if you can click them or let them play a little bit more? On channels like YouTube you can use this as a way to support your favorite channels and ad clicks on click bait articles would end up making online ads even more inefficient. Companies will be wasting money and this is easier to do than trying a boycott.
Why?
There are enough idiots who would keep coming for terribly written content designed to provide emotional roller coasters and misinformation. We can't change the advertisement landscape by boycotting. We need to do something different. If we can make the value of advertising on certain despicable fake news/ Yellow Journalism websites, we could make online ads look a little worse and make companies have second thoughts. Even if that doesn't work, the companies would at least be wasting their marketing money.
It's A Passive Strategy And I Mean No Malice
I support the Laissez-faire and I hold Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard in very high regard. I'm not proposing any attack on capitalist companies or practices. I'm simply suggesting a move against the despicable practice of maintaining Yellow Journalism and overall decay of the quality of the media and the advertisement landscape that is the lifeblood of the ill-incentivized system.
Don't expect massive changes or results. You weren't going to have them with boycotting. You were mostly just saving yourself a great deal of toxicity. When funds are misallocated, the wealth fades away. The problem is malicious entities with massive wallets. If you can at least make them spend inefficiently, you are making their grip on things slightly worse. If the number of clicks are going up but sales stay the same, the free market message would be clearer. If they just see the clicks go away, they'd just be trying to change the presentation of ads instead of the philosophy that drive them.
The Positive Perspective
Above everything, this is just a new way of looking at the world. Instead of fighting an uphill battle I'd like to simple deal some passive damage along the way. Companies would either get the message or waste some extra money from their treasure chest. It's win-win. You can look back and smile that you did something that had a tiny impact.
Somethings cannot be changed. But sometimes you can make them end faster. MSM propaganda, Yellow Journalism and Fake News is here to stay. We have to make that stay hard to sustain. Make them run out of funds faster.
