The vine has many meanings in the Bible, the prophet Isaiah in his teaching called Israel "the vineyard of the Lord", with these words he said so: "The vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in" Isaiah 5:7. And the Lord in his covenant demanded that this vine bear very special fruits, fruits of life, justice, and peace. The Lord in his wisdom and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) blessed the nation of Israel when it obtained good fruit, but discarded his vine when it did not bear the expected fruit.
Jesus in the Gospel of John took up this idea from Isaiah, but in a different way. Let us remember that the Kingdom of Heaven, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, announced by Jesus is progressive, gradual and incremental, that is why Jesus often used the image of the tree to highlight these characteristics of this heavenly Kingdom.
Men in the thought of Jesus, must live "progressively" the gifts to bear the fruit of eternal life. If this does not happen, men, like the fig tree that Jesus cursed (Matthew 21:18-22), are doomed to ruin and perdition.
And our Lord Jesus, to emphasize the idea of unity in the spirit, the spiritual gifts of concord and communion, and the concept of progressiveness, taught us with a quote that he is the true vine, and the sons of God, that is, those who recognize him as "son of man", its branches. The Lord with his spiritual love (Agape) calls us to the true life.
With these words, he taught this spiritual truth to his disciples in the gospel of John:
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples" John 15:5-8.
