The ninth stage of the Dakar Rally, which would take place on Wednesday, had to be canceled due to a landslide. According to the organizers of the competition, the disaster caused by the torrential rains that pass over regions of Argentina and Bolivia caused considerable damage in the village of Volcan.
The highway used by the drivers and organizers of the race to go to the camp ended up being blocked 40km north of Jujuy, a fact that made it impossible for teams to make adjustments to their cars, trucks and motorcycles, as well as the rest of those who are working in the competition .
"As the highway has been blocked, many vehicles, competitors, assistance and logistics of the Dakar were directed to take an alternative route through San Antonio de Los Cobres, extending the distance in about 200km," the organizers revealed in an official statement.
Because of the long distance that would be covered in the alternative route, all those involved in the Dakar Rally would not be able to arrive in time in the Salta camp to start the ninth stage. Thus, the competitors will go straight to Chilecito for the tenth stage, scheduled for Thursday.
