I hinted at the idea a few days ago of a toy shed for our back yard that would also be a stand for our rain collection tote. I've drawn up a plan now and a bill of materials for it. And I'm ready to start saving to do the job.
I ran the idea by the minister of finance (the wife) and she has yet to make a decision. I need to float her the main benefits of budget savings and cleanliness. So far I only presented it as a project, which Melissa has little regard for. Know your audience, I suppose.
Materials:
(4) 8 ft. 4x4s
$45
(2) 3/8 ply wood
$35
(1) gate hinge kit
$20
(17,922) screws
$50
Total project cost: $150
That's not counting the cost of gutters, which I haven't looked into in months, but I remember being a relatively cheap project.
The idea would be to have the rain water run down gutters into the big tote. That would turn the house into an 1150 square foot funnel. Can't think of a much more efficient system than that. A good one inch rain storm would over fill the system with over 700 gallons. I'd say that's scalable.
It'd water the garden for a couple days. I'm not sure our water cost to calculate a payoff rate, but it would definitely save us on our water bill. Ooh! And imagine if I ran a hard line to the gardens so I would just be able to turn the nozzle on to water the whole place. And the yard too! Maybe our grass wouldn't be dead.
Y'all comment and help me beg the wife for the green light on this project. It'd be a lot of fun!
