The news are finally out. RX is going electric!
According to Motorsport.com, the World Rallycross Championship will change from petrol to electric cars fom 2020. This means that the Supercars will be fully electric in just 2 years.
A source told Motorsport.com the following:
“Electric cars will be the world championship. They absolutely, categorically will be the world championship. Fifteen cars are required to begin in 2020. Nine different manufacturers have been engaged in the discussions and negotiations so far, but the ability to buy the required components and build a car has to be open to privateer teams if they want to go that way too.”
The new cars will be based on a common carbon chassis kit, including suspension and brakes. But luckily the body shell and motors will be able to be from different suppliers, and as such different models can be made. Thank god, I think it would be really boring if not, with only the same car model driving around.
Motorsport.com's source stated that even though the RX is going electric, the current Supercars won't go away. They intend to keep them in some kind of international championship, if the market is interested.
